Although British and French abolitionists of the late 1700s predicted that manumission and the blockading of slave ships would gradually undermine it, slavery continued to be the dominant cultural and economic force in southern America until the end of the American Civil War in 1865.

(A) would gradually undermine it
(B) to be a gradual undermining of it
(C) would be a gradual undermining of slavery
(D) to gradually undermine slavery
(E) gradually undermining it

(A) would gradually undermine it - (1) a verb is needed here right after the subject to make it a dependent clause so would is correct, (2) it - the antecedent of it is slavery and it is correct structure because it is placed right next to the noun it is modifying. We usually have it before but right after is also okay, (3) gradually - an adverb is used correctly to modify a verb. Structure✅ Meaning✅

(B) to be a gradual undermining of it - (1) a finite verb is missing, use of the infinitive verb is not correct.

(C) would be a gradual undermining of slavery - (1) a verb is needed here right after the subject to make it a dependent clause so would is correct, (2) gradual is an adjective which can only modify a noun but here it is wrongly modifying a verb❎. Incorrect.

(D) to gradually undermine slavery - (1) a finite verb is missing. Incorrect.

(E) gradually undermining it - (1) a finite verb is missing. Incorrect.

Therefore, option A is the correct answer.

I chose A, as

Quote:
(B) to be a gradual undermining of it
"to be" doesn't sounds right

Quote:
(C) would be a gradual undermining of slavery
two things can't be "a gradual undermining"

Quote:
(D) to gradually undermine slavery
doesn't work with predicted

Quote:
(E) gradually undermining it
doesn't work with predicted

(A) would gradually undermine it
'Would' is correctly used with predicted. 'It' here refers to slavery. Correct choice

(B) to be a gradual undermining of it
This choice uses 'to' instead of would

(C) would be a gradual undermining of slavery
This choice is too wordy

(D) to gradually undermine slavery
This choice has the same error as A

(E) gradually undermining it
this choice has no verb

Option A is the right choice here

use of Would vs to or altogether missing the connecting verb. E is clearly wrong as not having connecting word. Also "manumission and the blockading" was put up "To" block/discourage/undermine the slavery. Would is wrong so A and C are out.

Between B and C, B is clearly bad usage of grammatical construction. D is clear answer.

Again here no kudos. Despite having clear explanation and correct answer. I have no idea why.

anu21v - The answer to this question is A. Your response indicates the answer is D. Hence, it was not awarded.
