Since conscious patients often died of shock on the operating table, the invention of anesthesia was essential to the development of surgery as the invention of the propeller was to powered flight.
(A) the invention of anesthesia was essential to the development of surgery as the invention of the propeller was to powered flight
(B) inventing anesthesia was as essential for the development of surgery as the invention of the propeller was for powered flight
(C) the invention of anesthesia was as essential in the development of surgery much as the invention of the propeller had been for powered flight
(D) the invention of anesthesia was as essential to the development of surgery as the invention of the propeller was to powered flight
(E) the invention of anesthesia was essential to the development of surgery, so was the invention of the propeller essential to powered flight

A. ( X is to Y as Z is to T correct phrase and //)

This ssentance reminds me the other sentence:
To have their own house is the wish of many youth as it was of thier ancestors.

ANS should be D. If there is not "essential" in option E, I might have chose E for answer since "so" and "answer" are duplicate in meaning.

X is to T as X is to Z is different from As X is to Y As Z is to T.

X having own house

T wish of many youths

Z wish of ancestors

We have the same X in the sentence you compared with. Not in the given sentence.
Also,D quantifies the extent and A simply does not quantify the need for anesthesia

It was tricky, but I ended up choosing D.
