I would like to apply for MBA in 2024, and would appreciate any advice :)

Chinese born and raised in Hong Kong
Male
28 years old
3+ years studying /working overseas
Certified FRM
Passed CFA level 2
GMAT 750

Work Experience:
-close to 6 years of working experience in total
-Spent 4 years in a well-known French investment bank working as Equity Derivatives Structurer and Equity Derivative Sales, and was publicly recognized for achievements at APAC level.
-Currently working as a Structured Products Specialist at one of the largest Private Bank in the world
-The team is very well-regarded both in terms of media coverage and internal evaluation, spent almost 2 years here and not planning to leave for now

Education:
- Bachelor of Economics at a top local university in Hong Kong (QS ranking no 34 in 2022)
- a low 2:1 (roughly translates to 3.0-3.1/4.0)

Extracurricular:
-Some mentorship to aspiring university students
-Badminton player at a semi-competitive level
-Joined student club as a committee but didn’t take up leadership roles

Target Schools:
-UK: Imperial,LBS
-US: Columbia, Chicago, MIT, Wharton, Stern (Is Harvard a stretch?)

Career goal post MBA:
-To further my career and work as an investment strategist or structured products sales at top private banks in US / UK

Please provide your insights on my target schools and any other suggestions!
Is my low GPA a deal-breaker here?
Also, I feel that my EC is way below average...

You are a good candidate for ISB early entry. Your academic background is good. Your participation in extracurriculars and cocurriculars is good. You will need to target a GMAT score of 720+

A few things to do meanwhile:

Get in place a strong recommender: A strong recommendation letter can provide valuable insight into your professional abilities and help support your application.

Show your leadership potential: ISB looks for candidates who have potential for leadership and can contribute to the class and community. Highlighting your leadership experience and potential can help you stand out as a candidate.

Get familiar with the ISB culture, values and mission and how your goals align with it.

Professional development courses: Taking courses in a relevant field, such as healthcare management or business, can demonstrate your commitment to learning and improve your knowledge in the field.

Leadership development courses: Taking courses in leadership or management can help demonstrate your potential for leadership and contribute to the class and community.

Online courses: Taking online courses on platforms like Coursera, edX, and LinkedIn Learning, can be a great way to gain new skills and knowledge from top universities and companies.

Participating in online communities, forums, and online events relevant to the ISB program, can help you gain knowledge about the current trends, challenges and opportunities in the industry and also showcase your interest in the program.

Networking with alumni and current students of ISB can be a good way to learn more about the program and the culture of the school, which can help you tailor your application and show your fit for the program

Your experience in the financial industry, especially at a well-known French investment bank and a large private bank, is a strength in your MBA application. Your GMAT score of 750 is also very competitive. However, your average GPA may be a concern for some premium schools, but it is important to note that MBA admissions committees take a holistic approach and consider all aspects of your application, not just your GPA.

It's true that your extracurricular activities are not very strong, but it's not a deal-breaker. You can show your leadership potential by highlighting examples of teamwork and problem-solving in whatever activities you have participated in, your professional experiences, and essays.

Regarding Harvard, it's one of the most selective MBA programs in the world, so it is very competitive. However, if you believe that you have the qualifications and drive to succeed at Harvard, you should certainly apply. It will be essential to communicate how you have grown and developed since your undergraduate studies and demonstrate your potential for success in the MBA program and your future career.

The first thing to do after you’re waitlisted

Take a deep breath, absorb the information, and realize that this is not a rejection. The admissions committee wants to continue reviewing your application. Consider this an opportunity and spring into action!

Take a day or two to review the gaps in your current profile and work on them. Retake the GMAT if that helps, or take a certification course aligned with your career goals.

The second thing to do after you’re waitlisted
Decide whether you want to stay on the MBA waitlist. If you know for sure that this business school and the program is essential to achieving your career goals, then it’s worth being on the waitlist.

According to Caroline Diarte Edwards, Former Admissions Director at INSEAD, once you’re waitlisted, take a step back and think if you’re committed to staying on the waitlist. Do you want to work towards getting off the waitlist or do you have an acceptance letter from any other business school? Do you feel you’d be able to apply with a much stronger profile in the next admissions cycle?

The third thing to do after you’re waitlisted

Getting off the business school waitlist is no easy task. In order to do so, it’s important that you show constant improvement in your profile and be willing to work on any part of the application where necessary!

For example: if a specific section has been highlighted by an admissions committee as something they would like improved then go ahead and improve that section. A 300-400 word email to update the admissions committee would suffice.

In case, the admissions committee just asks you to wait, then wait.

Here are five tips to help increase your chances of getting off the MBA waitlist and into the classroom

    1. Get in touch with the admissions committee. The first thing you should do is reach out to the admissions committee and express your continued interest in the program. This is your opportunity to reiterate why you believe you would be a good fit for the school and what unique contributions you would bring to the MBA class.
    2. Update your application. Take a close look at your application and see if there is anything you can update or change. Did you recently receive a promotion at work? Did you take any new courses or complete any new projects that highlight your leadership skills? Make sure to highlight any new developments in your application so that the admissions committee can see that you are still a strong candidate.
    3. Request an interview with a member of the admissions committee. This is your chance to make a personal connection and to demonstrate why you would be an asset to the school. Be prepared to discuss your goals, why you’re interested in the program, and what you would bring to the classroom.
    4. Keep up with your professional and personal commitments. The admissions committee will be looking at your activity since you submitted your original application. Keep giving your best at work. In case you land a leadership position or a promotion, this update will definitely improve your chances of getting off the MBA waitlist.
    5. Stay positive, yet pragmatic. If you’ve been in touch with the admissions committee, and have improved your profile since you were waitlisted, there’s every reason to be hopeful. Remember, the adcom still sees potential in you. However, if you’re waitlisted after Round 3, then there’s a slim chance of you getting off the waitlist.

Short answer is - Yes, you definitely are eligible to apply for an MBA with 7 years of experience. You have to choose those programs that favor people with higher work experience. For example, many schools in the Europe geography look for people with average work experience of 7 to 8 years

Hello!
I am looking to apply to R1 for the 2024 intake. I would request you evaluate my profile for top US/Europe FT MBA programs.

Background and nationality:
29 years, Indian Engineer Male working in Consulting sector. Lived for 15 years in Saudi Arabia (though no work per se).

Undergrad/certification information:
Bachelor in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from BITS Pilani with CGPI 7.33/10.
Completed Product Management course on Upgrad from DUKE CE

GMAT:
700 (Q50,V35) - 4th attempt after score plateau of 650. Can plan to take GRE if that helps.

Work experience and leadership:

Total Work experience: 5.5 years

1) Currently working as Senior Associate in a strategic healthcare consulting firm working with top US pharmaceutical clients (since June 22)
Brief of the role: Lead a team of 2 associates to operationalize the market research studies of top pharma companies for projects worth USD 2+ Mn. Few Initiatives to help the company save/generate USD 1+ Mn. The promotion is due in Sept this year.

Prior work experience:

2) Spent 3 years as a Consultant in an Impact consulting firm dealing with clients— CSR companies, NGOs, Foundations, and Government. Received 3 promotions, one every year.
Brief of the role: Lead a team of 5+ members to execute end-to-end 25+ impact assessment projects across Education, healthcare, livelihood, Water Sanitation and hygiene etc. Led PnL of projects worth USD 15 Mn. Executed data collection exercise across 22+ states of India covering 6000+ stakeholders. Helped the company expands its clientele base. Significant contribution in building team capacity and growing the team size from 7 to 32 members (when I left)

3) Worked as Development Consultant to an Indian Member of Parliament on a 1-year long fellowship program
Brief of the role: Worked on multi-million government and CSR projects to bring development to the constituency. Notable ones such as solving the decade-long arsenic contamination problem, enhancing healthcare delivery services, beautification of lakes, etc

4) 8 months as Senior Analyst at IT consulting firm. Left the firm early because I wanted more functional role and hence transitioned to social sector.

Extracurricular activities/Achievement:
1) Started a social enterprise helping artisans sell their products on e-commerce in 5+ categories with total sales of INR 1.2 Mn in 1.5 years
2) Held a leadership role of being Hostel Rep (part of the Student Union at BITS)
3) Held various leadership roles on various organizing committees of international events at the college
4) Received a Letter of Recommendation from a Member of Parliament I worked with

Post MBA goals:
Short-term: Join consulting firms in the likes of MBB in ESG or healthcare vertical (because of my experience in consulting but in my current role I'm into operations of market research and would want to get into the more strategy-oriented role)
Long-term: Start social enterprise focussed on enhancing livelihood in Indian rural areas (Showcase my commitment to the social sector and combine learning from consulting experience)

Recommendation: From my immediate managers in my current and last company.

Additional point to note:
I applied to 3 schools this March - IESE (R3), HEC Jan intake (R3), and INSEAD Jan intake (R1) - and was rejected in all 3. I believe the GMAT score or essay or profile, probably, was the concern.

Total Work experience: 5.5 years

1) Currently working as Senior Associate in a strategic healthcare consulting firm working with top US pharmaceutical clients (since June 22)
Brief of the role: Lead a team of 2 associates to operationalize the market research studies of top pharma companies for projects worth USD 2+ Mn. Few Initiatives to help the company save/generate USD 1+ Mn. The promotion is due in Sept this year.

Prior work experience:

2) Spent 3 years as a Consultant in an Impact consulting firm dealing with clients— CSR companies, NGOs, Foundations, and Government. Received 3 promotions, one every year.
Brief of the role: Lead a team of 5+ members to execute end-to-end 25+ impact assessment projects across Education, healthcare, livelihood, Water Sanitation and hygiene etc. Led PnL of projects worth USD 15 Mn. Executed data collection exercise across 22+ states of India covering 6000+ stakeholders. Helped the company expands its clientele base. Significant contribution in building team capacity and growing the team size from 7 to 32 members (when I left)

3) Worked as Development Consultant to an Indian Member of Parliament on a 1-year long fellowship program
Brief of the role: Worked on multi-million government and CSR projects to bring development to the constituency. Notable ones such as solving the decade-long arsenic contamination problem, enhancing healthcare delivery services, beautification of lakes, etc

1) Started a social enterprise helping artisans sell their products on e-commerce in 5+ categories with total sales of INR 1.2 Mn in 1.5 years
2) Held a leadership role of being Hostel Rep (part of the Student Union at BITS)
3) Held various leadership roles on various organizing committees of international events at the college
4) Received a Letter of Recommendation from a Member of Parliament I worked with

Post MBA goals:
Short-term: Join consulting firms in the likes of MBB in ESG or healthcare vertical (because of my experience in consulting but in my current role I'm into operations of market research and would want to get into the more strategy-oriented role)
Long-term: Start social enterprise focussed on enhancing livelihood in Indian rural areas (Showcase my commitment to the social sector and combine learning from consulting experience)

Recommendation: From my immediate managers in my current and last company.

I applied to 3 schools this March - IESE (R3), HEC Jan intake (R3), and INSEAD Jan intake (R1) - and was rejected in all 3. I believe the GMAT score or essay or profile, probably, was the concern.

Additionally, your post-MBA goals seem well-aligned with the work experience. The healthcare or ESG verticals in consulting are a natural fit for your short-term goals. Your long-term goal of starting a social enterprise is also aligned with your previous experience. Overall, the goals seem realistic. We will be able to analyze whether you were able to present them convincingly in your written material if we get the chance to go through them.

Your extracurriculars are good too. You can showcase initiative, leadership and entrepreneurship through these as well.

Given that you were rejected by top European MBA programs, you may want to consider retaking the GMAT. The competition is high for top MBA programs, and many applicants have similarly impressive profiles. Overview:

Born in India, but lived in Japan for 8+ years, naturalized Japanese citizen. Fluent English, Advanced Japanese (JLPT N1)

GMAT 730, B.Tech from a no-name Indian college. GPA 8.7 / 10

Started my career at a WITCH company, moved to Japan within a year, and worked in a client-facing role for 4 years. (Project management / Client Liaison)

Moved to a computer software and services company listed on the S&P 500 in a technical sales position. Started at associate level, currently managing the department in APAC and India - 2 direct and 4 indirect reports across Japan, China, Korea and India. 3 promotions in 6 years. Consistently helped generate around USD 1M in revenue every year.

Co-curricular - Founded some clubs and groups back in high school and college. Used to do combat sports when younger. Used to be part of a Toastmasters club till a couple of years back (held a VP position).

Post-MBA Goals - Want to move into Customer Strategy at my own company.

Likely irrelevant, but also have a PMP certification (and tons of software certs). Please let me know if there's any more information I need to add.

Your profile seems to be strong and competitive for the top 15 to 20 MBA programs. There is diversity in the profile, which can showcase your ability to work in multicultural and global environments. Your professional growth seems to have been good as well with 3 promotions and good accomplishments (we will have to dive deeper here to create your narrative but on the surface, looks good). The undergrad GPA is strong. So that can make up for the no-name undergrad institute. The VP position in Toastmasters is a big positive and can be used to showcase your leadership potential and a well-rounded profile. The GMAT score is fine. The certification that you've mentioned may not be the primary focus in the MBA application but might add some value overall.
Clearly articulating your post-MBA goals (to be brainstormed and finalized during your narrative building process with us) in your application essays and highlighting how an MBA will help you achieve them will strengthen your application.
