I struggled badly in one aspect of this question:
It is asking for the sum of power usage at any instant in time to be >30 units. It isn't the case that the units used are added or tracked.
For example, when we say all three start together, at the 18th minute, the power usage is 15 units (from Machine A alone), and not 45 units (12+18+15 units from each machine up until this 18th minute).
I am not sure why I thought the latter was the case.


At any given minute, the total is only what the machines that are on during that minute are producing. Earlier minutes’ usage doesn’t carry forward. That’s why, at the 18th minute, only Machine A is on, so the total is 15. It is not 45, because you don’t add past minutes, the generator triggers based on instantaneous usage only.

< 1 minute approach -

Before even jumping onto the answer choices one should have inferred these points -
1. only in 2 scenarios the power limit exceeds 30 -
a. A + B ( Start time of A and B co-incide) - Think of this as a new machine.
b. A + B + C ( Start time of A, B and C co-incide) - Another new machine.

now the 2 new custom machines that we built would co-incide at what time ?

would be the HCF of LCM of machine a. (90) and machine b. (180) -> 90 (Option D)

This question asks for the time when the total power usage of the 3 machines exceeds 30 units of power.

Now we know..
A uses 15 units every 18th minute
B uses 18 units every 15th minute
C uses 12 units every 12th minute

So, when would the power usage be >30....
Whenever, both A and B are ON together as 15+18 or 33 units. Of course this would also include when all three are ON.

Both A and B will be ON after LCM(18,15).
18=2*3*3
15=3*5
LCM(18,15)=2*3*3*5=90 minutes

C

Hi - I understand that we can use A+B or A+B+C, why have we not considered the scenario when all three machines are working (A+B+C)?

In that case the LCM(18,15,12) is 180 minutes, so after every 180 minutes, but this is already included in multiples of 90 minutes(when A and B are on togetger..

Shouldn't the sentence read "...total power usage at a given time.."? I understand it is logical to assume it is at a given instance but total power usage exceeding 30 can also be interpreted as first instance when 30 is crossed irrespective of whether they work together or not?

At a certain factory, each of Machines A, B, and C is periodically on for exactly 1 minute and periodically off for a fixed number of consecutive minutes. The table above shows that Machine A is on and uses 15 units of power every 18th minute, Machine B is on and uses 18 units of power every 15th minute, and Machine C is on and uses 12 units of power every 12th minute. The factory has a backup generator that operates only when the total power usage of the 3 machines exceeds 30 units of power. What is the time interval, in minutes, between consecutive times the backup generator begins to operate?

A. 36
B. 63
C. 90
