If x is total number of students, then the number of students who walk to school is 40%/2+60%*40%=44% C)

50% of boys and 60% of girls walk to school, so somewhere between 50% and 60% of boys and girls combined must walk to school, and only one answer makes sense, 56%.
It is just a weighted average problem, so we could use weighted average principles to find the exact answer if more than one answer were plausible.
