Re: At a certain restaurant, if each hamburger costs the same am [#permalink]

In this value type of DS question, the cost of one hamburger (excluding Sales tax) has to be found out. Let this be C.

From statement I alone, the total cost is $4.77 for 3 hamburgers, including a 6% sales tax. This means,
3 * C*(1+\(\frac{6}{100}\)) = 4.77.
Can we calculate a unique value of C from the equation above? We very well can since there is one unknown and one independent equation.
Statement I alone is sufficient. Answer option B, C and E can be eliminated. Possible answer options are A or D.

From statement II alone, the total cost for 4 hamburgers, including a 6% sales tax, is less than $6.50. This means,
4*C (1+\(\frac{6}{100}\)) < 6.50.
From the above inequality, we can only obtain a range for C and not a single value.
Statement II alone is insufficient. Answer option D can be eliminated.

The correct answer option is A.

Hope that helps!

At a certain restaurant, if each hamburger costs the same amount, what is the cost, excluding sales tax, of 1 hamburger?

(1) The total cost, including a 6 percent sales tax, is $4.77 for 3 hamburgers.
(2) The total cost, including a 6 percent sales tax, is less than $6.50 for 4 hamburgers.

the Main thing to understand is that inequality, such as in Statement 2 cannot give a unique answer in this case.

A is the final answer.
