At the start of a school year, a certain course had registered male and female students in the ratio 7 : 4. The ratio of male and female students became 5 : 3 after some students dropped the course. At the end of the school year, 19 males and 9 females had finally completed the course. What was the initial number of registered male students?
(A) 60
(B) 70
(C) 72
(D) 84
(E) 96
19 Males and 9 Females completed the course,
Hence, 28 students completed the course.
Now students that are present after everyone dropped the course are in the ratio (5:3)
Means 8x students will be there at the end of the course.
As 28 students have completed the course, therefore a minimum of 32 students will be there (From 8x)
Now initial registered students were in the ratio (7:4).
Means 11y students had registered.
As minimum 32 students are present at the end of the course, therefore 33 students minimum would have registered in the beginning (From 11y)
Now breaking 33 as per its ratio (7:4)
This implies minimum 21 males (y=3; 7x3) and 12 females (y=3; 4x3) are there.
As we need number of males registered initially, from previous statement we know it should be a multiplier of 21.
Hence in my opinion from the answer choices it is 84,IMO DWaiting for OA :D
