What GMAT score do you need for the top business schools?
While there’s no fixed cut-off, looking at average scores from recent intakes provides a useful benchmark.
If you belong to a competitive applicant pool (e.g. Indian IT Male), aiming for 10-20+ points above the average can improve your chances.
For the Top-30 US MBA programs, published GMAT Classic Edition scores (2024 intake) range from ~660 to 740, while for the Top EU/UK programs, they range from ~580 to 710.
With the GMAT Focus Edition (GFE) now in place, we’ve also included estimated Focus scores in the tables (see images). Since schools haven't yet published average GFE scores, these are conversion estimates.
To keep things uniform and conservative, we’ve used the upper end of the GMAT Focus equivalents based on GMAC’s concordance table. For example, a 730 Classic Edition score could map to 675 or 685 in the Focus Edition, so we’ve taken 685 for consistency.
Remember that GMAT is one part of your MBA application, albeit an important one. A strong score is helpful, but your overall profile - work experience, CV, essays, and recommendations - plays an equally crucial role.
