Hi Shorub,

To start, the process of applying to (and ultimately attending) Business School will require a big investment of time, money and energy on your part, so you really should make sure that the Programs that you apply to match your career goals/needs. There are a variety of factors that go into selecting the Schools that you'll apply to. Instead of taking suggestions from a bunch of strangers who don't know your exact perspective on all of this, here are some other things to think about:

1) Is there a particular company that you want to work for or industry that you want to work in? Certain degrees are more appropriate than others if you have a specific career goal.
2) What do you want your MBA to do for you?
3) Do you want to go to School full-time or part-time?
4) Are you willing to relocate? Are you comfortable with working through a program that is primarily online?
5) Are you going to be applying for scholarships?
Etc.

Beyond that, since it sounds like you're in the early phase of your studies, it would be a good idea for you to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can take 2 for free at https://www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a little studying first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the basic content and question types, then that's okay - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
2) Going forward, how many hours do you think you can consistently study each week?

Hello Rich,

I have worked in manufacturing and mostly quality engineering for the 15 years in various capacities starting as an engineer, rising up to managerial roles. My experiences span across the following; analysing warranty data and drawing insights from it, analysing defective parts for causes, cross functional engagements for solutions and implementation, Top management engagement for setting and reviewing strategic goals, etc.

Through an MBA, My goal is to look at career transition into consulting mainly on corporate strategy.

I am looking at a full time MBA and willing to relocate with family (wife and one year old son). I have accumulated some funds but expect a scholarship or financial assistance to support my goal.

I have been brushing up an older version of OG for the last one month, spedning 2 hours per day. I will take the mock test this week.
I intend to prepare further with OG 2019, spending 2 hours on weekdays and a minimum of 6 hours on weekends. I am also taking ideas test strategies from GMAT club. With this plan I hope to take the GMAT in August 2019 with a Target score of 720+. I plan to apply from September 2019 for admissions.

Looking forward to your views.

SHORUB

Hi Shorub,

Now that you've defined some of the details of what you're looking for in an MBA Program, you should be able to research the various Programs to find the one(s) that best match you're parameters. Once you've put together a list, you would likely find it beneficial to reach out to each School directly with questions, ask to meet with Administrators and/or Alums, etc.

You've got plenty of time before this year's Round 1 application deadlines, but you'll have to be really 'efficient' during these next few months to properly balance your studies, crafting your applications and everything else that you have going on in your life.

Many Test Takers who use a 'book heavy' study approach end up getting 'stuck' at a particular score level, so you'll likely end up needing to invest in some non-book resources. The OG books are great sources for practice questions, but they're not designed to teach you Tactics, patterns or the little 'secrets' behind the GMAT - for those, you'll need Course-oriented materials. To that end, you might want to work on the OG a little later on in your studies. I suggest that you study as you see fit for the next 1-2 weeks, then take a FULL LENGTH CAT (with the Essay and IR sections). That score result will give us a better idea of your current Quant and Verbal skills and how you might best study going forward.

HI Shorub,

As CrackVerbalShree mentioned, deciding which business school is right for you is a pretty personal decision that is based on many factors.

That said, since you are currently studying for the GMAT, do you need any advice regarding your study plan? Also, you may find it helpful to read this article about How to Score a 700+ on the GMAT.

Hi Shorub,

Thank you for your post. Generally speaking, MBA programs are focused on leadership. There are a number of universities that help students transition into consulting roles, depending on the strength of your profile and the geographic region you are targetting. It is difficult to guide with limited information, but this article might help you think about the target school selection process.

A traditional MBA in the mid-30s will be tricky. Be sure you have spent adequate time researching programs and clearly articulate your goals.

I am happy to continue the conversation offline. When ready, please reach out.

Good luck!

Hello guys,

I have planned to take the GMAT in August 2019 with a Target score of 720+.

I have been brushing up the OG and going through all the forum posts.

I am 35 / Indian / Male / married and working in manufacturing / quality area. Looking at a career shift to consulting through an international MBA. I might also consider an MBA focusing on leadership. Can someone suggest what kind of B schools should I be looking up.

Looking to more inputs from this club.

- Shorub
