Hi Everyone,

I was selected in UNC in R1 for the Full Time MBA program. My previous employer who I was working for has put a non compete case against me for joining a new company in the UAE.

This is a pure case of vendetta. I had left the company after completing all the formalities and my resignation was accepted by them.

How will this affect my admission? What if they send a mail to the university?

1. how long is the non compete clause?
2. will it be valid if you go the the US and look for internship / FT roles after 2 years? (you said its for UAE)
3. It will not impact your B-school admission but I am wondering if your employer will say anything negative about you if the b-school does a verification check later in the summer? That's the situation you will want to prevent yourself against. I hope you have a leaving letter that is positive/neutral.

Hi,

Here's my reply to your questions:

1. The non compete clause is valid for 2 years.
2. No, this clause is only valid if I move in the same industry (marine engine spares) which is highly unlikely. I am planning to switch to consulting.
3. The management got changed and it was sort of a hostile takeover. They have filed these cases against everyone who left. I have a No Objection Certificate and a positive Experience Letter from the previous management.

Don't worry about it so much then. It will be 2 years by the time you graduate and you'll be in a new country and new industry.
I doubt it should come up in the Vera check, that is if UNC does one. Just try asking current students about this. In that case ONLY, you may want to share any further info with the b-school. Otherwise, you're all clear :)

Hi Advitya ! Your situation is unfortunate, but it is unlikely to impact your UNC MBA admission unless your previous employer escalates the matter directly to the university in a way that raises serious ethical concerns. Given the hostile takeover and similar cases against other former employees, this appears to be a retaliatory move rather than a legitimate contractual dispute. Your No Objection Certificate (NOC) and positive Experience Letter from the previous management are strong evidence in your favor. If UNC is contacted, (just be prepared) they may seek clarification from you, in which case you should respond professionally with a factual explanation. It might also be wise to consult a legal expert to confirm that this case has no bearing on your future employment. It should be fine soon, Good luck
