Becoming more consistent with verbal scores

Question

Hi! I have my GMAT coming up and I was wondering how to become more consistent with verbal score. I score between 40 and 44 depending on RC passages and difficulty of some CRs typically with at least 3/4 SC mistakes and 1/2 RC or CR mistakes. I was wondering how I can move this from a solid V40 to a solids 44 as at the moment 44 is only if I have a good day.

Hi Thegmatboy,

In another recent post, you noted that your Official GMAT was just 4 days away (re: on January 17th). Since you are so close to your Official Test Date, you should NOT be trying to do too much studying. At your current 'ability level' in the Verbal section, the additional points that you're after are almost certainly going to be based around rare and subtle issues (such as rare grammar/idiom rules, tougher Inference questions with subtle differences in the answers in CR and RC, etc.). With RC and CR, a certain type of note-taking is required to maximize your performance, so if you're often answering those types of questions "in your head", then that's part of why you're missing those points.

At this point, you should not be trying to make any significant changes to how you respond to the Test. In these last couple of days, you should limit your studies to general practice and light review (NO CATs and NO 'cramming') - you would be better served by getting some extra rest so that you can go into Test Day calm, clear-headed and ready to work.

Hi Thegmatboy, The right thing to do would be to analyze the detailed solutions of the questions in which you made mistakes. Identify at which part of the solution you made mistake and the reason for making the mistake. Compare your approach with the right one and make sure you learn the right method of solving those question types. Having said that, the test taking strategy also plays a very important role in deciding your score.
