adam1212 - Taking a course will not automatically improve your performance on the test. In fact, taking too many test prep courses can adversely affect your performance. I strongly believe that your fundamentals are not clear in the verbal section. You should pause and reflect whether you applied the right strategies, took the practice tests in ideal testing conditions, reviewed the test and maintained an error log.

Hi adam1212,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. Before we discuss how you might best continue with your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) On what dates did you take your 3 Official GMATs and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?
2) How long did you study before each attempt?
3) What study materials have you used over the course of ALL of your studies?
4) Over the last 2 months, on what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
5) What is your overall goal score?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi All,
my third attempt of gmat on 25th feb. Scored 550 with q47 v21. Me second attempt was on FEB 1st with V30
Prepping for verbal is a bit like walking through a minefield. Here's why. A LOT of stuff that people say about how to prep for verbal and how to answer verbal questions doesn't really work, and applying those ideas can be worse than not preparing at all.

For example, one person who worked with me started in the low 40s in verbal. After months of "preparation" involving "learning" many things about GMAT verbal, her verbal score had dropped to the low to mid 30s. Why? Because the things she had been "learning" weren't any good.

So, to survive the GMAT verbal prep minefield, you have to avoid the mines, i.e., the incorrect ideas that can drive your score down rather than up.

Of course, if your verbal score went down 30 percent, after you did a lot of prep, then clearly, what you were doing to prepare was counterproductive. Right? So, either you didn't avoid the mines, or you misapplied potentially useful things that you learned.

So, now, you have to continue to prepare, except you have to go forward with the awareness that many things that are said about GMAT verbal aren't really true or useful, and you have to sort the useless and counterproductive from the useful and relearn how to approach GMAT verbal.
