Hello Foggy,
Sad to hear this. I had a close encounter as well, when I was doing application for INSEAD and got the news that my company is going to lay off 3 Managers out of 9 in my department in 15 days. Though luckily I survived, I can totally relate to stress situation brings in. Hang on there buddy, my advice would be to stick to your long term plan.
To answer your question, No there is no obligation to notify schools after your applications but indeed you can spin it off in your interviews. What I learned is that it all depends on your story. How you connect all the dots and how truly you can portray yourself without faking. As you mentioned, you will be helping one of your friends, that is a pretty good way to spend rest of your time before starting school. I have seen people, who after getting admitted leave their current job and do a short stint of what they like. Again, it depends on how everything fits in the story and do not leave any stone unturned.
Your score looks solid. I would like to know more about your profile. Would be happy to help you and share my daunting experience of 15 days. But looking back, Had I gotten fired, I know it would not have mattered, provided that I got admitted to INSEAD. Hope this helps.

foggy
Hi everyone.
I am working for a very good company in a remote location in America (think Boise / Des Moines) and even though I like my job, living here has made me depressed and affected my work performance somewhat. I don't screw it up, but managers can tell I'm not gonna be here long term. Plus I have always wanted to get an MBA and now is the time to do it.
At the end of Oct, my boss told me he'd give me 3 months to find a new job, and my last day will be Jan 31, 2019. Because MBA is my priority (looking for a new job in a new location takes 3-6 months), I won't have enough time to find a new job. Boss agreed to give good recommendations, and based on my past interactions with my target schools, as long as I don't screw up a part of my application I'd get a pretty good shot to be interviewed in Feb for R2.
My question is: Once my employment is terminated, will I have to notify the schools and my interviewers? I'm planning to move to a booming / heavily gentrifying city to help a friend of mine who is building a hotel / entertainment space and wants me to work with him on the finance/operations aspects of it, and travelling extensively. After my depressive years working in this location, I want to take a break from corporate life for a bit.
And is it a good idea, if I spin this unfortunate event into a good story? Post MBA I want to transition to the hospitality / lifestyle / entertainment industry and the work for my friend will be a strong case for it. I'm already working in real estate finance, so that wouldn't be mission impossible.
I appreciate any other advice you may have.
