We look at the idiom not only A, but also B.
A - wrong usage of this idiom. not only appealed to ... but the widespread success - after but it has to be Verb + to
B - correct.
C - magicians - wrong. magiacians are people, not shows, so we break down the logic of the list: minstrelsy, animal shows, magician acts.
D - wrong usage of this idiom - same as in A
E - first of all - why was the part in 19th and 20th century America thrown out? It breaks the original meaning.
second of all (please correct me if I am wrong) i am not sure that there is a correct usage of an idiom. not only because it appealed to ... but also because it incorporated (without <to>), so the parallelism is broken. Compare it with option B.
