Hello all,

new to the forum and my first question here.

can you recommend a good mock test series.
which one is better
MGMCAT or Veritas Prep in terms of keeping the difficulty level real

Would appreciate any suggestions.

the mock test series that is as close to the real exam is GMAT Prep exams on MBA.com.
I think it is worth giving the other mocks such as MGMCAT or Veritas or from some other reputed source before you jump onto GMAT prep as they are limited !

Hi primealtimus,

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. Since that algorithm is proprietary, no GMAT company has an exact match for it, thus CAT scores can vary a bit based on the 'biases' involved in their respective designs. The most realistic CATs available are the 6 from GMAC (the 2 free CATs, and each of the 2 that come with Exam Pack 1 and Exam Pack 2), but retaking a CAT that you've already taken is NOT a realistic way to assess your skills - since you will likely see some 'repeat' questions that you have already faced. Unfortunately, seeing even a couple of repeats can 'throw off' the Scoring Algorithm and impact your pacing, energy levels, fatigue, etc. (meaning that they would likely all appear to be better than they actually are). Thankfully, the CATs from Kaplan, MGMAT and Veritas are all 'close enough' to the real thing that they will provide you with a relatively realistic score assessment (assuming that you correctly take the CAT in a realistic fashion).

In addition, it's worth noting that each CAT is really a 'measuring device' - when used correctly, it will give you a realistic score and help define your strengths and weaknesses, but it will NOT help you to fix any of those weaknesses. To raise your scores, you have to learn the necessary Tactics and put in the proper practice and repetitions. The CAT will show you whether your studies are helping you to improve or not. As such, you really shouldn't take more than 1 FULL CAT per week.

Before I can offer you any additional advice for your studies, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far?
3) On what dates did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Definitely echo the suggestions to take all the MBA.com CATs.

Any other vendor varies not just on the algorithm, but also on the question style, particularly on 700-level questions. For example, quant for Manhattan at 700 level is more convoluted and time-consuming math that’s unrealistic to the real GMAT. And their RC passages are also lengthier and more convoluted. For Veritas, the 700-level math seems a bit easier and tests more of the tricks/edge cases than combination of concepts together than the real thing at 700 level. Also, I’ve noticed that the “correct” answers for some of the hardest Veritas SC questions actually weren’t correct or were debatable. (Answers obviously should not be questionable if they follow all the proper grammatical and stylistic rules, which I’ve seen the hardest Veritas SC questions not follow)

Hi primealtimus,

Are you just starting out with your GMAT prep? Also, out of curiosity, have you taken any official GMAC practice exams?

They are good but none are comparable to official ones. EG has good analytics if you are into it.

Compared to real tests,

MGMAT
Quant: higher
Verbal: slightly lower
IR: abt the same

Veritas Prep
Quant: abt the same
Verbal: slightly higher
IR: I haven't tried

Gold standards are the gmatprep tests from GMAC mba.com. Good luck

Ah, I meant in terms of score accuracy. So, a V40 on a Manhattan mock would translate to what on a real GMAT for example?

MGMCAT. Always. Don't think twice before choosing it.

Not sound advice. I'd suggest reading the other previous posts and looking at product reviews.

Have you given an official practice test? If not then I would advise you to give one because official practice exams must be used to check your current level. Use the practice exams by various prep companies only for practice. So I would recommend you to use both Manhattan and Veritas prep practice exams just for practice.

I only use course provider mock tests to build my knowledge and practice it under time pressure. There is always a knowledge gap to fill in.

Personally, I don't buy their individual scoring (e.g. Q49 V40 total 720). However, from this forum, Veritas seems to give lower total score than real, while MGMAT gives closer approximate total score.

Hi

while preparing for Gmat, I ve used veritas, manhattan prep, and experts global mock test series beside GMAC official tests

Based on my personal experience, I would say experts' global mocks have a little edge over other

Veritas: Pros The scoring algorithm is good ( after giving 4 mocks, my official score matched the avg. of veritas mocks), the test is adaptable
Cons: RCs are tough and 3/4 are long RC , which is hardly the case in actual exam.

Manhatten Prep: Pros Verbal section is solid , full proof ,and little tough but score matches the offical score
Cons:Quant is quite hard , for instance if you are getting 44-46 in Manhatten mock , than you will achieve 49 in oficial test

Experts' Global Pros : Sections difficulty is quite balanced , scoring algorithm is good, answers explanations are comprehensive , and the most
important question structure is quite Gmat centered
Cons: on some tests, Ive fount quant little on upper side of difficulty but it might be because of test adaptability.

I hope the above comparison will help you with choosing the right one

Use only official mocks for testing your level.

Use test prep company mocks for practice. Manhattan, Veritas, and Kaplan are decent for practice but don't infer anything from these scores. Use them for practice, that's it!
