How is the curriculum? – Personally curriculum has shaped out to be far better than what I expected. I was looking for a general MBA with business core subjects, but I underappreciated the essential WaW courses like Business Culture by Devdutt Pattanaik, Presentation skills by Raj Upadhyay and Indian Constitution by Madhav Khosla. These courses broaden my framework of understanding and help me understand the context behind the business core classes.
I’m looking forward to the dual specialisations offered in second year. I get to choose both what I like, and what I’m good at. Lol.
Block teaching is also something you must fit in, as not all students have been able to cope up with the continuous stream of assignments and final course submissions.
How are the professors? – I had the best classroom experience I've ever had in my lifetime, thanks to some of the top teachers I've ever had in my coursework. Business Statistics by Rohit Dev from NYU, Entrepreneurship by Gerry George, Financial Accounting by Mark Finn, and Decision Models by Ziv Katlan were some of the best classes I studied. In my undergrad it was me learning subjects on my own or with my peers support at max. Exams were limited to mugging up. Here at BITSoM, I am genuinely learning new things and exams are exciting as they are generally open book exams and test conceptual clarity rather than surface level technical details.
How is your interaction with the admissions team? – The admissions team has been extremely responsive to all of my inquiries. Every student, along with his or her family (optional), had a one-on-one call session with the head of admissions to alleviate any concerns about attending a new college. While not all my concerns have been addressed, at least I feel like, I have been listened to.
How are the facilities? – The interim campus is located in Powai at the Hiranandani Knowledge Park. While we have all the amenities provided to us, a permanent residential campus would have been nice. We are housed in a nearby apartment society. Each of us gets a separate room in a 3 BHK. The fun thing is there are no hostel restrictions, so we have a lot of fun times – as much as the curriculum allows.
How is the student peer group? – Everyone in my class has a unique blend of experiences and backgrounds. Working on every group project has broadened my thinking and allowed me to learn from other people's viewpoints.
What is one thing that surprised you about BITSoM so far? – At any point in time, I was amazed by the administration's participation in shaping students' careers.
My mentor is VP marketing in a huge conglomerate and conversations with him helps me understand the long-term implications of each career decision.
PDP sessions with Professor Leena Chatterjee are another highlight. She cuts right down to the specifics of my profile and gave valuable insights as to who I’m as a person.
The number of learning possibilities available to students as part of programmes is vast, and it has become our major responsibility to make the most use of them.
Anything else? – Me and my batchmates are working on many initiatives to make the student experience of incoming cohorts better.
