Hello everyone,
I need to ask for help with choosing the right school for me. I was accepted to Bocconi International Management CEMS and ESSEC Master in Management Grande Ecole program. I think both of those schools are excellent places to study and I have a problem deciding where I would like to start my next academic step. I have time until Tuesday to accept an offer from one of them.
I am not sure which branch of business I would like to work in but my guess would be either consulting or luxury goods. I’m not sure about the country I would like to stay in for a longer period. For most of my adult life, I was moving around the world so I have high flexibility in this case.
To help me decide I made this small table, maybe you would like to add something that could help me decide. At first glance, Essec wins for me but something is tempting about Bocconi I cannot underestimate.
Pros of Bocconi:
-Higher prestige
-Second-year in other CEMS University
-CEMS diploma along with regular one
-Good partner schools for exchanges as well
-Higher chances of living outside of Italy after studies (than outside of France after Essec, on paper)
-Living in a big city instead of small-town
-People look at it as an old but good, recognizable university
-Alumni network (but I heard not as good as after Essec)
-Milan is surprisingly saver than Cergy (on paper)
-Better recognizability
-I heard it has a good placement in consulting and Luxury goods industry
Cons of Bocconi:
-Italian is a less spoken language than French
-Lower-income after Bocconi than Essec (on paper)
-The Italian economy is worse if I had to stay in Italy after it
Pros of ESSEC:
-Higher in rankings
-Grande Ecole
-Can spend some time in Singapur
-Good exchange partner schools
-During studies internship opportunities
-French is a more spoken language
-Better country to live in (personal belief, no offense, I have more friends there)
-Higher-income
-Flexible of the program
-Bigger alumni network
-Chair classes
-I heard it has high M7 placement if I wanted to do an MBA one day
-France economy is better than the Italian
Cons of ESSEC:
-Less prestigious
-Living in the small town
-The surprisingly high crime rate there

Hi. Graduations on your admits. Did you make the decision already?
You really don’t have much time left but if you had a little bit more time, I would recommend focusing on what do you want to do and where you want to work in the long run. I think in either case you will have to start learning the local language. I’m not sure if you know some of it already, but whichever one you see working out for you, I would start with that.
It is possible to find a job without knowing French or Italian but knowing the local language, expand your job opportunities. I’m not sure if you can get to a business level within a year but showing substantial progress, wooden press the number of people. You’re also young so hopefully it can stick to your mind very easily. Worst case, you can always look for jobs in Netherlands, Ireland, UK, etc. however, everyone else who is an international student in Germany, Spain, France, UK, Netherlands, who does that speak French or Italian and German would also be looking for jobs in those places.
If you are planning to go to your home country or not recruit in France or easily, I will probably be leaning slightly towards France just from what I’ve heard about the business school and MBA program. At the same time, I would’ve probably preferred to live in Italy as opposed to France... but that is purely my personal preference 😬

Regarding school. Something you should know about CEMS is that, you might not reading get Post graduate work visa after doing Cems program in either country. I checked for Ivey and UCD, none of them offer an year or two long work visa stay. So if you are looking forward to reside in country after graduation and find a job, you should confirm the post graduate work visa rules of Italy. If it is same as Ivey or UCD, I guess it makes your choice down to ESSEC.
BUT if you are willing to take chance, then Bocconi definitely has a better world University ranking. Job market is slightly better in France.
And language is definitely a barrier.
Do consider which language you are willing to learn. Because as per my source. You definitely need B2 level French knowledge to work in consultation in France.
And a big congratulations on turning both schools.
