Bombed GMAT 500 (q31 v27)  [#permalink]

Took the gmat today after three months (Aug to Oct) of studying and totally bombed it. Got a 500 (q31 v27), which is the lowest in each category out of my CATs.

Study Materials:
Magoosh Premium (score calculator had me at 42-45q and 31-38v but I do recognize that this isn't some hard fast rule)
OG12 and Quant RevieManhatten Sc and # Properties

CATs
Early Sept. Gmat Prep #1 570 33q 36v
Mid Sept. Gmat Prep # 2 570 42q 28v
early OCT Vetaris Prep #1 590 37q 35v

My CATs were never stellar but still not as abysmal as what occurred today. All CATs were taken in an empty class room. Breaks were not used, nothing out of the ordinary was done and I simulated test conditions to the best of my ability.
Testing site 1.5 hours from my house. The previous 3 days before the exam I flew in and out of town for a campus visit (this might have been an issue). Got a full 8 hours of sleep prior to exam.

Another issue I think I ran into is that the first two practice tests were with little OG work and all Magoosh. After reading several posts reccomending that OG be my main source (and considering I felt that a change was needing since my score wasn't really improving between the two gmat prep tests) I switched to primarily OG12 material for the last 4 weeks of exam preparation.

Quant wise, I traditionally do better on DS than on PS (I don't know why this is a reoccurring theme). CR and RC have never been an issue, but SC gives me trouble. I went through OG12 and answered 71% of the SC problems correctly before going through and reviewing them in depth and I thought I had a solid hold on the concepts, and I went through the MGMAT sentence correction book.

The question is where do I go from here? How long should I wait for retake if just a 600+ is my goal. Could it have been a bad day and my out of town trip threw me out of whack? I also took an adderall before which is different from my previous CATs. Should I invest in more Gmat question/exam packs? Thanks

I think you should order an ESR as the first step.

This will give you an idea about the areas where you slipped up majorly. Then you can develop a study plan based on the weaknesses you have identified from the ESR.

I will second nishantd88 on ordering the ESR at the earliest.
Once you have the ESR, the experts on the forum will be able to detail the best strategy to help take out the GMAT

Here are a few links which I would suggest you to read in order to
understand where you might be going wrong :

1.GMAT Quantitative Megathread
2.V30 -> V40
3.Reading Comprehension Guide

For your next attempt I would suggest you to buy the GMATPrep Combo - QP1,EP1 and EP2

For more details and to buy this combo you can visit the following link
https://www.mba.com/india/store/store-c ... ction.aspx

Make sure to practice these questions and analyze your mistakes diligently and
this alone will help you improve your score considerably.

Hope this helps you!

Hi ,

It seems you would need to work on your Quant a little more. For Quant you can try out the MGMAT guides they are phenomenal and cover the entire syllabus really well. Just by going through these guides and solving the OG will help you reach 600+. I must add that if you are particularly looking to discover and improve on your weak areas in Quant; a subscription to GMATCLUB tests is the best way to do that. They are indeed phenomenal and will not only pinpoint your weak areas but also help you improve on them. Further taking multiple mocks might help. Apart from the GMATPREP, Manhattan GMAT tests and Veritas Prep Tests in my experience have a good verbal and Quant section and will certainly help you point out and improve your weak areas.

Lastly I would also encourage you to purchase the latest version of the verbal review and GMAPREP QP 1 for some great additional practice. Here is a link that will help you with your decision.

Hope this helps. All the best.

I had the same experience, bombed at 500 as well after 2 1/2 months of full time prep.. my mocks weren’t stellar either but not as bad as it went on the test day. I was way behind on time in verbal section and ended up guessing almost last 15 questions or so!
I was travelling for 4 hours before the test as well. But even worse was the testing centre, it was this tiny, dirty place with 4 testing stations, noisy outside, had heat on or something, I could barely breath and stare at the screen at one point in verbal section.
Recommend not taking it at this place called Winsoft Computer Centre, in Mohali, India.
Any suggestions or advice on how should I go from here is appreciated!

Regards

Hi gilltaurus,

You will likely receive more of a response if you post your information in your own thread (instead of piggy-backing on this one). In that way, the conversation can stay focused on your situation and questions. Make sure to include all of the relevant information on how you've been studying and your goals - and I bet that you'll receive a number of responses offering advice.
