Is anybody looking into housing options already? I want to live downtown and I heard there's a Booth or U of Chicago discount at some apartments. Is this true?

Dunno about discounts but I've heard that there are three buildings that house about 60% of the Booth population: Millennium Park Plaza, MDA City Apartments, and Columbus Circle.

I've heard from all 3 students I've spoken to that 50% of Booth MBA students live in Millennium Park Plaza (MPP), which I believe does provide a Booth discount (or at least has in the past). The Booth population is so high there that I have been told it is almost a campus housing feel.

I'm looking into costs of housing in the Loop. Looks like around 1600 for a 1BR and 2500 for 2BRs!
Excited to meet you all at First Day!

I too have heard that >50% of Booth students live in MPP; what I'm trying to reconcile is why.... See reviews https://www.yelp.com/biz/millennium-park-plaza-chicago-2

I guess it comes down to $$ and proximity to peers, but still, pretty sure the shake weight got better reviews than this place...

OK, what are the other options? I don't think MPP is looking good for me right now.

Yelp reviews for MPP are pretty garbage. Apparently horribad internet, poor insulation, terrible management, and elevators that take days...

Well, just to give you an idea of the area, here is the loop area with rentals listed on zillow: https://www.zillow.com/homes/for_rent/house,condo,apartment,duplex,townhouse_type/days_sort/41.891576,-87.61337,41.87346,-87.645385_rect/14_zm/

MPP comes up on this search as well. It's situated pretty much directly at the top lefthand corner of the actual Millennium Park (big green space on map). Of course it's going to put it's best foot forward on zillow, but in its defense it does appear to list prices that are substantially cheaper than comparable units in the area (~$1k less in some cases). Those yelp reviews tho.... I'd honestly be most worried about spotty and/or slow internet service; that stuff drives me crazy.

It's really a tough call I think. There really is a lot to be said for living in the same building as "everyone" else, and if you're either single or married w/o kids I think that living in the loop is the right move. If ~50% of the student body ends up living in MPP despite the bad reviews, it might be worth it to take the cost savings and grin-and-bear the negatives in order to avoid missing out on being directly involved in that community.

Yelp reviews for MPP are pretty garbage. Apparently horribad internet, poor insulation, terrible management, and elevators that take days...

From talking to my classmates who live there (I don't)...

The bad - Management is fairly unresponsive, the internet is mostly ok (but horribly frustrating when it isn't), elevators can be slow especially if you're on upper floors.

The good - The construction to the ground floors is finally coming to a close. Lots of people live there - strong network effect. The price is tough to beat. The location is central to bars, restaurants, the park, the Metra, and Gleacher. The quality is fine as long as you're not hell-bent on granite, stainless, and hardwood.

Overall, most would still be in MPP if they had it to do over again. There are drawbacks but new Boothies keep signing leases and 2Ys keep renewing theirs. Anecdotal evidence points to the pros outweighing the cons.

Pro tip: If you wait 'til First Day, you'll likely find a current student willing to cut you in on their referral bonus for listing them on your application. Pretty sure you can't have any contact with MPP before providing the name though, or it won't count... Same is true for most other apartment buildings.

Thanks brandon432.

What other places around the loop do Boothies stay? I'm sure you have Boothies in your building, it'll be nice to compare the options and decide if we want to put up with what MPP has to offer or not.

I have a wife and daughter, so we have a nice, big condo in the South Loop.

I did a more thorough post on housing last year here. Check it out:
booth-chicago-accepted-students-class-of-164746-60.html?hilit=housing#p1353732

Some popular buildings:

Loop - MPP is by the most popular, Columbus Plaza is #2. After that it drops off a bit. Shoreham, Tides, Aqua, MDA City Apartments, some AMLI buildings, and Park Millennium are all represented.

South Loop - Most just go by their address number (mostly on S. Michigan). 1130 and 1212 are probably top-2 with maybe 30-40 (guessing) Boothies each.1250 and Sky55 also come to mind. Little more space, better finishes, more pet-friendly, better amenities, same proximity to Metra as MPP, 5 minute bus or 10 min. walk to MPP, but a bit more decentralized on the whole.

How do you know if you have been offered a scholarship? Are they supposed to mention it in the email, during the phone call, or in the admission packet?

Though I think I will not receive it, I am just wondering.

I think I will be happy to attend Booth regardless.

Not sure, I didn't get any mention of any either on the call or in the packet. I'm just assuming none, but I'm very happy to attend as well.

I've been really impressed by the amount of outreach from the school and alumni since getting the acceptance.

I asked about this on one of my post-admit calls. I've spoken to 3 Boothie residents who live at MPP and they all love it. They said to keep in mind that most of the poor reviews probably come from Non-Booth residents, and that the place really does feel like a Booth dorm - even for those who aren't part of the program. So that may be part of the animosity.

Plus, apparently they give some nice discounts to Booth residents (I think) so that would offset the high cost.

I was in Chicago over winter break and stopped by the MPP leasing office. The receptionist confirmed that discounts for Boothies exist, but said 2015-16 prices haven't been set yet. She also stated more information will be aviailable to those that take the housing tour during First Day weekend. Place is popular as it's right downtown, and the entrance to the Millennium Metra station is just across the street. "L" stop is just a few blocks away as well.
