Booth ($$) vs. Ross ($$)

Question

I was lucky enough to receive a 50% Tuition Scholarship at Booth and Ross. I am struggling though on which school to go to.

Post MBA Career goal is to move into Management Consulting at MBB (I have a strong finance background). I am from Ann Arbor and would like to work in Detroit, which is why I applied to Ross. But I am wondering if I would have an even better shot with a name like Booth on my resume.

BEFORE someone says it. Yes, I know that if I could get into MBB at Booth, then I could get MBB at Ross. However, I feel as though being surrounded by Booth students would push me harder than students at Ross.

Thoughts?

Hey congrats on your admits.

I'll save you time- go to Booth. However, Ross is no slouch either, I am a second year at Ross and have absolutely loved my time here. But at the end of the day, Booth is a stronger brand and should land you pretty much at any consulting firm "if you do the right things at the business school".

It would not be so much be the name of booth that would get you hired at MBB, but rather your classmates pushing you, the consulting club and proximity to the Chicago offices.

So yes, you’re thinking is correct that a higher ranked program would improve your chances though it would happen by indirect means.

What about in the Detroit office? Would it be better to go to Ross if I want McKinsey or BCG (no Bain in Detroit) in their Detroit office?

It is hard to read offices. I have heard many theories/etc. I don't think this should be a consideration in particular as to which office you want to be in. You put in your top 5 and they give you your pick. I am guessing Detroit should be less competitive but again it is likely a smaller office than Chicago for example or Miami, but you can get Detroit office regardless of where you go to school.

P.S. My comment about the office was that you are in the same town/not far to be able to network and meet folks and make connections, not that you would land a job in that office somehow. That was not my implication.

I don't know much about Ross, but if I were in your shoes I'd choose Booth. It was quite a difficult choice for me when I was deciding between schools and it almost was a coin toss. Now I'm quite happy with my decision. For consulting, Booth is incredibly solid, but at the end of the day, you need to put in a lot of effort into networking. Again, I can't do the comparison between these schools, but Booth is an amazing school and our finance curriculum is unmatched.
