Bourbon, created from a mixture based mostly on corn, and Rye whiskey, consisting of at least 50% rye, is distilled to contain no more than 80% alcohol per volume and is poured into new oak barrels for the aging process, as doing so complies with federal regulations.

a) is distilled to contain no more than 80% alcohol per volume and is poured into new oak barrels for the aging process, as doing so--The Plural Subject Bourbon and Whiskey needs a plural verb. Remember 'and' can unite two or more singular subjects, forming a Compound Plural Subject. Wrong Choice

b) is poured into new oak barrels for the aging process and is distilled to contain no more than 80% alcohol per volume and, as to do so--Wrong Choice for the same reason as A

c) are distilled to contain no more than 80% alcohol per volume and are poured into new oak barrels for the aging process, as it--Wrong Pronoun. It is singular. Also, what complies deferral regulations is the action, not the nouns.

d) are distilled to contain no more than 80% alcohol per volume and are poured into new oak barrels for the aging process, as doing so Correct Answer

e) are distilled to contain more than 80% alcohol per volume and are poured into new oak barrels for the aging process, as to do so -- Changes the meaning. The original sentence states that contain NO MORE than 80%.

Sorry but I am not clear on how bourbon is plural in this sentence . In other words which of the below sentence will be correct

a) Bourbon is poured into a glass for drinking

or

b) Bourbon are poured into a glass for drinking.

Am I missing something here ?

Bourbon is a singular noun. However, the original sentence states that Bourbon and Rye whiskey are distilled. We have a compound plural subject, so we need to use a Plural Verb.

Hope it helps!
