Hello Guys, I am an international applicant who has been living in US for the last 5 years. I have been a little late starting in my school research process, but more I have looked, the more I like CMU. I wanted to apply in R2 but was stunted by essay #1 which asks what has the candidate done to learn more about CMU. I haven't visitited campus or talked to many current students , so I didn't feel comfortable answering this question.
My question is this, I am now planning to visit campus, learn more and then apply in R3. Do you think its a fool's errand to apply in this round i.e. does the selectivity increases exponentially at this stage? Or is it still a attainable task?

I think it all depends on the strength of your candidacy as well as partly on the class size and selectivity. At a school like Tepper where class size is very small ~200 or so if I'm correct, getting in the 3rd round will obviously be very difficult.
On the other hand if you are a strong applicant, and it seems you could be based on your 740 GMAT...there may still be some hope. Obviously, GMAT is one component, but if you have the requisite work experience, leadership, community, service and are articulate and engaging you may be able to get in.
My personal suggestion is you look at schools with larger class sizes, where you could potentially have more seats left from which to get in. If you like Tepper, take a year to build up some more experience and address in gaps in your resume and apply round 1 next year.

This is my general impression, and not specific to a particular school: I think success in R3 depends to a good extent in the uniqueness of your application. By that point, most of the class is filled, including lots of people with the typical backgrounds. So to make it into the class you really have to stand out, be someone that would really add value to the class. Might be even more the case for schools with a small class size such as Tepper.
Would it be too late for you to apply next year? If I knew then what I know now, I would have started preparing in January rather than June...
