Quick question to those who applied in R1, did you submit official GMAT report during the application? I am applying in R2 and not sure if I need to send a official score report with application or self reported would be fine.

Edit: later info shows you can send in temporary ones until matriculation. As an applicant, I sent in official ones since the beginning to avoid headaches later on :).

I have a question about Booth's 4-Slides essay. The question states that
"Considering what you've already included in the application, what else should we know about you?"

Is it OK to include material from the Online App (It asks us to fill Community experiences - upto 12) or the Resume that has not been covered in the Essays ? Or does it have to be things not mentioned absolutely anywhere?

thanks

You have to send in official ones. Most schools consider you next round if the official transcript arrives late beyond the round's deadline.

Not true. FAQs clearly state that the unofficial score is good enough for the initial review of the application. The official score reports are only required if admitted to Booth.

From the FAQs
GMAT test scores are self-reported via the online application for the initial review of your materials. (Note: Self-reported scores are considered unofficial.) Your official scores are required if you are admitted to the MBA program.

I don't think there's a right or wrong way to approach the power points. But to put you at ease...what you described above is what I did.

Oops sorry about the GMAT req  .
For the PP, I think it would be good use a theme-based introduction of yourself. Try to combine your infos and come up with a succinct 4 page story about yourself either chronological or demonstration transformation.

As nice a suggestion as this is... I would suggest that you ignore this completely. This PP is your only real opportunity to express yourself outside the confines of a general application. You should really use this opportunity to be creative and show something different.

I was recently admitted, and I did something very different from this... and, I recently met up with another admit and he did something even more unconventional than myself.

The purpose of this PP is to show your creativity and ability to express yourself, not to summarize your application on powerpoint slides.

Good luck in R2 everyone... I hope you see you in the fall!

-J

EDIT: with that said... I see that smkwei got in as well... so I am sure there is something to be said for conventional wisdom.

I agree. I was admitted in R1 too and my pp was focused on showing my creativity and the unique and funny aspects of my profile. I didn't mention anything about work or education, but instead wrote about EC activities, personality, family, friends, funny things about me, etc. This is your chance to stand out, so think of the pp as a chance to create something that will make the adcom say "wow, I want to meet this guy right now!"

I think people misunderstood my meanings a little bit. In any case, I will write one more clarification. I agree with the above two posters. I never stated repeat info. I stated combine info (new or old, depending on your own decision) to best present yourself. The PPT is indeed an important draw to entice the AdCom to want to meet you, I personally believe.

By definition, due to being a PPT, you will have to make it look creative anyway. But I feel it is a good chance to present a coherent "you", combined together, rather than broken pieces of essays answering specific questions such as why MBA, why Booth. As for how you present yourself, you can use anecdotal, timeline what not. Pictures do help.

Lastly, we are not AdCom. As demonstrated, there are many different PPT that were sent in AdCom. Some are similar; most are different. In the end, as long as you present yourself positively, coherently and actually say something that pique the curiosity of AdCom (within reason), I think you are fine. There is no one right/wrong way to do this. Hope this helps!

Should I reapply to Chicago Booth R2, or R3 with career/EC growth??

Waiting till R3:
Pros:
Pending new job in January (different/unique industry, similar function, international experience)
I just took a lead role for a volunteer organization, and would have progress towards event planning.
Attempting the GMAT for a 4th time. (630 (Q39/V38) on first attempt is my best, but I just know that the quant side can come up).
Cons:
Less admits, i.e. more competitive.

Applying R2:
Pros:
More admits, same round I got an interview in last year
possible waitlist.
Cons:
Recommendation letters might not come in time for R2
Feeling like work hasn't shown sufficient career progress since being rejected in March 2011.
Not much EC in last 6 mo.
Still applying with weak GMAT.

Notables: despite my profile, I interviewed R2 last year. My dad is a Chicago GSB alum (might have helped to get the interview). My B.S. is in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh, and my M.S. (3.71) is in Systems Engineering from George Washington University

Your advice is appreciated!

booth1styear

Most Important: Act now. Once Jan starts, 1st years get busy recruiting for internships and 2nd years get busy recruiting for jobs + helping 1st years.

Not that I'm shooting holes in your story or anything, but second years have been done with general recruiting for a while now and the bulk of the recruiting for most internships is over. I'm sure you knew that though.

Totally depends on the function, for marketing people like me, we are just beginning to apply for our internships, interviews are end of January -February. A lot of the groundwork has already been laid as far as networking with companies to get on the interview list, but a lot is still left to do. 2nd years who accepted an offer with the company they interned with or already found another full-time position are coasting and loving it, but for the ones that didn't get offers or didn't want to go back, they are still actively recruiting and trying to line something up.

I would avoid using the Notes section of the powerpoint. The four slides will be printed out, so I don't think the notes will be included. If you need to include a footnote, I would do it in small type at the bottom of the slide.

Not sure if this information is correct. Booth Admission committee mentioned that they view the PPT essay on their computers and do not print them out. Second, they also mentioned that you can include a footnote on each slide with maximum of 50 words.

I am very sure that I had read somewhere (most probably on the Booth website only) that while footnotes were allowed last year, this time around, they will be not be allowing footnotes. Also, I feel that after the first read, they definitely would take a print out too. So, god-forbidden, you end up being deliberated upon in the end, won't it be a damper to have only your part essay being seen, since the foot-notes wouldn't have come out in the print? I think it is best avoided. Keep only that much which can come out in a print format too.

Moreover, I personally feel that you must keep your literature to a bare minimum. Just as fellow posters have mentioned above, what the adcom want to see are innovative and creative ideas, ones that show you as a person and literally bring you out in front of them as they read the application. They must feel the urge/need to meet you after going through the ppt.

I know it is easier said than done, but honestly, try and have fun with the ppt. It will reflect in your slides. And yes, try and de-clutter. Please try and keep free white spaces in the blank pages! Do not try and just fit everything in, it won't do much good.

Just my two cents. Good luck guys! :)
