Hi guys, I just submitted my app yesterday and the status changed to "Your application is now being printed and prepared for review" today, but one of my recommenders has not submitted their rec yet...should I be worried they'll review with out it? :| Thanks!!

Interesting. I thought you couldn't submit your app until both recommenders had submitted their letters.

since youre in for ED youre not gonna be checked out til december so u have time :)

I emailed them, hopefully I didn't mess up too bad!
I'm applying regular decision, CBS is rolling admissions right?

Anyone else feel relieved when they don't get an e-mail from CBS? Maybe I'm just being a bit pessimistic...

I'm with you. lol. I'm dreading checking my e-mail -- for the first time, I actually welcome spam -- and check my phone constantly to see if I get a missed call.

Yeap, but they're going to finish up ED before starting RD, I believe.

i think its a lot better to pick someone from your industry -- both to have an alumni contact in the future who youve dealt with but also -- assuming you have a good solid story and what you want to do, theyll be more excited about it and can speak to all that a lot more. or , as i did, go with a secondary industry youre curious about/interested in as an alumni contact. if you want to do finance or MAYBE consulting, i would never pick someone who is a marketing person.

That's a good point. But if you end up with a not-so-nice seasoned vet in your field, he/she might try to test you and bust your chops. I think picking someone from a different field gives you more wiggle room, so to speak. I think your main focus should be trying to get in, you'll have plenty of chances to network once you're there.

But I haven't gotten in yet, so I do I know. lol. Regardless, best of luck to everyone!

Hello all. I am new to the forum but am in a similar situation. I submitted my application for ED on 10/5, and got the invite to interview yesterday (10/17). I am currently in finance but am trying to move into Entrepreneurship/ working at a start-up so I think picking the right interviewer is crucial. I am trying to stay away from the die-hard Finance/Consulting crowd and might interview with someone who has a marketing background and or is working at a start up. Do you think this is the correct approach? I just don’t want my interviewer to be grilling me on why I want to leave finance.

BTW, this forum is fantastic. I have learned more about the application process on here than on any school website.

I think the approach to the interview is to be strategic. Find someone that has interests similar to you solely to make sure the conversation is interesting and memorable for a good reason. The alumni interviews are not intended to be grueling and screw you over. The interviews are more of a validation check. Its like the admissions person is like I think this person can be admitted, lets do the interview. The interview is more of a will you contribute to Columbia, will you help improve their stats (yield, internship placement, job after grad), and are you sane. I would not worry about getting grilled about leaving finance, but be prepared to answer you desire to move and why you need the MBA.

I had chosen someone who was working in an industry I wanted to get into after CBS to understand how he was prepared and it made for a better conversation for me. Again its different for different individuals, but most alumni that agree to interview enjoy the process and are there to help the applicants.

Just my 2 cents. Take it for what its worth.

Thanks. That is helpful. I will probably start with the person who is now working at a start-up since that is something I am very interested in doing post graduation.

yeah but hopefully you know your research for the field youre going into and you can talk and impress so the interviewer can say 'this person has their **** together' rather than 'oh yeah sounds like a cool plan i guesS?', if youre not so sure on that then i guess yes taking someone else from a diff field is better :P
