Do you guys interview with the adcom or with an alumni in your industry? Or do you pick? Is there a difference or is one generally better than the other to do?

does it already say under review? or being printed and readied for review?

I submitted last Friday and it still says being printed and readied for review. Should I be worrying about this?

The way interview works is you get a note stating you're being invited... then get a link within 24 hours. You type in your location and search radius and it shows nearby alumni. You then select and send an email to schedule a time with them that works and submit that date/time to the system... that's it.

So no activity from adcom today? So much for analyzing past performance to predict future results.

You can't interview with the adcom.

Your only option is to interview with an alum, but if that isn't possible, you can arrange a phone interview with a current student.

I'm from Michigan, so I opted for local alums. After I got my list, I checked them out on LinkedIn and found one in the same industry as me. I think it might have paid off, because we spent awhile talking about the industry in general toward the end of the interview.

That said, if the adcoms are looking for something in particular from the interview process, they're more likely to get their answer if you interview with them rather than some alum who may or may not play the game. So who knows whether its a benefit or not.

As far as I know, the adcom won't interview you under any circumstances. The only option is to interview with alumni or have a phone interview with a current student.

I say this because I had trouble finding an alumn in my city and I hate phone interviews, so I asked admissions if I could come to New York to interview in person with either the adcom or a current student. They said no and that I'd be meeting with an alumnus in New York if I were to fly out there.

Submitted today!! :-D

Went to the diversity event earlier today that was rescheduled from the weekend of the hurricane. It was co sponsored by the black and hispanic student organizations. A lot of first year, second year, and alumni attended the event so that it was very easy to speak to more than a couple of people about anything you wanted. There were also at least 5 admissions people there as well (including Mary Miller) who were happy to answer any questions. Nothing new from the admissions staff but they were much easier to approach in this event as there were more student/alumni/admissions staff per person then usual. All the current students were super friendly, even went to grab a drink with some of them afterward. Two of them even offered to read my admissions essays (I was already too far in and wanted to submit soon so I will not take them up on it, but it was very nice of them to offer!!!). They were also very honest about their experience in the school and suggested to start reaching out for internships/fellowships between now and when I would start school. They also were able to answer any questions people had about essay topic suggestions, gmat strategy, and sharing their opinion about your application and what could make it stronger based on their experience. Best admissions event I have been to thus far by a long shot.

If you cannot find an event that is co-sponsored by a student organization of some sort (I think this was out made the current student turn out so great), I would suggest contacting one of the clubs directly. They were so approachable I do not think they would say no if you wanted to talk to one of them about the school.

Hey mbaer. I was at the diversity event also, and went to grab a drink afterwards as well. I'm quite sure we saw each other as there was probably only 60 people in attendance. I was the tallest person there so I wasn't hard to miss. lol.

I totally agree with mbaer in that the students, admissions reps and alumni were all great. I was impressed by how down to earth everyone was, and how they were all so willing to help with essays, advice, questions, etc. I even saw someone that I met at the Toigo final interviews last year who is a current CBS student. Seeing him was definitely a welcomed surprise! I wasn't quite sure if i was going to submit Early Decision or Regular Decision but after attending the diversity event I will definitely be submitting within the next two weeks!

I was at Spotlight On: Diversity today and I have to say that any reservations I had about Columbia's culture and student body were put to rest. The admissions staff, current students, and alum were accessible, down to earth, and so personable. They offered really good application advice that I can use to coach my recommenders. I was taking notes the whole time and now have a plethora of information with which to explain "Why Columbia?' in my essays. The absolute best moment was when Mary Miller took off her shoes, stood on a coffee table in her stockinged feet, and announced that one of the perspective students in attendance had just been admitted in the ED round. So all you ED people it looks like announcements should be forthcoming.

One thing I took away from the event is that the student body really wants to see others succeed. They offered their assistance with everything from essay proofing to connecting me with current students with similar career interests. The help they offer one another through the Peer Adviser and tutoring programs (CBS, BBSA, etc.) is also very encouraging. All of my worries about a cutthroat environment were assuaged after today. I can't wait to apply!
