1st year here. Participation just depends on what class you attend...in some of the classes like marketing there is so much participation and hand raises that only a fraction of the ppl actually gets to speak in the interest of time....in other classes like econ maybe you won't see so much participation. In some classes there are also significant cold calling as well. That would be the same across every top school in the country (except maybe the 100% case schools like HBS? not sure)
To the guy who made the comment on the accounting class, yeah Professor Libby is awesome. He wrote the book we're using and he actually makes the topic interesting, you'll hear laughing in every session.
As far as academic rigor, Cornell is widely known as one of the most rigrous and challenging programs. We finish Core classes in one semester (divided into 2 seven periods) while other schools take the entire first year. The second semester is devoted to classes, workshops, and practicums (collectively called Immersion) in a field picked by the student that prepares him for his particular summer internship. That is why Cornell students are generally better prepared than their counterparts during their internships.

I already got the essay for the Park Fellowship in my email this morning less than 24 hours after submitting. That's some quick turnaround right there, hopefully the same will hold true of the rest of the app process.
Essay question:
What is your greatest example of leadership and what personal qualities helped you succeed in that role? Same 400 word limit, due 10 days after the question is received.
Fairly standard leadership question... hope this helps others considering applying for it.

Cornell Class of 2010 stats are out:
GMAT only went up 4 points to 694. GPA stayed the same at 3.3. Applicants up to 2667 from 2177.
