Hi mbacheckmate
Are you an R1 applicant or R2? Could you please tell us when your application went under review?

I am a R1 applicant and my application went under review on Nov 4th.

Got the interview invite today...yohoooooooo!!
Can you guys please share your interview experience.

Congrats! Here is an excerpt from someone at this forum last year:

1. Why mba? goals? Why Johnson?
2. tell me about your work.
3. Difficult situation at work.
4. weakness?
5. how do you sell yourself to your post MBA employer? (I was a little bit surprised by this)
6. other schools that you applied? How would you choose between them if you were admitted? (woaa..another unexpected. Man, I wish I could choose).
7. what would your peer say about you?

Thanks Jinjaa....

There are a lot of Cornell specific interview questions at
https://gmatclub.com/forum/interview-questions-for-cornell-kellogg-tuck-58966.html#p424611

You are welcome mbacheckmated... haha

The link you sent is quite helpful.

From what I hear, Cornell Johnson considers the interview as MOST important. Furthermore, you get extra points for interviewing at Ithaca. And don't think only the ADCOMS have a say, I think the students you meet can practically veto your admission if they think you are a chess playing *bleep*.

Argh, I wish I could interview in Ithaca... it is just too hard to make it all the way there for an interview with such short notice. Oh well, hopefully my alum interview will go well enough to counter the fact that I did not make it to Ithaca.

Hi Reeve015, I wish luck to you.

Did you face any specific problem during the interview? Was it telephonic / campus? Would greatly appreciate if you could share your experience; if you feel comfortable.

- thanks

Hi guys, I had a quick Q on campus visit.

I've already submitted my Cornell R2 application. I'm planning to travel to the US this Dec, and visit other schools I will apply to in Jan.

Do you think a visit to Cornell help me in any of the following ways?
- Demonstrate serious interest in case I'm invited to interview later?
- Be remembered by AdCom?
- Make a positive impression on students who may have a say in decisions?
- Long shot :) Get them to review my application sooner and decide if they want to interview when I'm in town?

I'd like to know your take on this, honest feedback/personal experience here will help.

I'm travelling from Shanghai-San Francisco and need to know if the additional San Fran-New York trip will be worth anything at all.

Thank you!

I think a visit to Ithaca would achieve everything you mentioned, and also let you see what the town is like (it's a very small town, rather isolated, and quite cold in the winter)! It's quite a trek from San Francisco though... if you fly into NYC, it will take you about 3-4 hours to get to Ithaca by car or bus. You can fly to Ithaca, but there are not really direct flights from San Francisco, so you would have to do some connections.

As someone else also mentioned, yes I think making that extra trip to Ithaca AND letting them know you made that extra trek from SF to Ithaca from Shanghai would help. It shows you are really enthusiastic about the school. Cornell knows one of its perceived drawback is that it is in a small isolated town whereas its chief rival NYU is in the heart of NYC.

Having said this, I think visiting Ithaca is truly optional for those who live outside of North America. No school would expect you to take a week off to travel back and forth 7000 total miles and suffer through dual jetlag for a brief 45 minutes interview.

If you do so, however, you will earn double extra points. Just make sure you let them know you came to Ithaca from Shanghai JUST to check out Ithaca and interview with the Adcom.

One other thing. Cornell, as with most US campuses, is closed during Christmas and New Year's (around December 20 to January 3 or so). If you visit US campuses during that time, chances are you will not be able to meet anyone or even able to see inside the buildings.

About a week before your visit, you may get an invitation for an interview. Last year, many R2 received an interview invite from early to mid December (some as early as November). If you don't, you may want to politely email Johnson about the possibility of arranging an interview since you will be visiting Ithaca.

At a very minimum, you will get an "informal" interview by the students and faculty you will meet there and you will more than likely get to talk to the ADCOMS who will be there to greet the invited interviewees.

Good luck

My application went "under review" today.

I am a R2 applicant.

It says that the received my transcript and then in brackets hey say not official. Does anybody else experienced this?

thanks!

It means they have received your scanned transcript but not yet received your official transcript from schools.
If you haven't already done so, you should have your Ugrad send an official transcript to Cornell Johnson.

I see... that means I will have to gather three different university transcripts... from universities around Italy... great... ;( Can't I just wait to see if I am admitted or not? The have to receive them just to evaluate me?
thanks!

You have an option of scanning your transcripts and attaching them in the online application (this is recommended by Cornell). But, each and every B-School will eventually require you to send the original official transcript directly from your school.

Architect, JinJJa .. this is all very useful information, thank you! I might need to spend a night in Ithaca - are there any reasonably priced hotels close to the campus? Anything but Statler :)

Everyone seems to stay either at Best Western or Statler (right across from Sage Hall).

Both have shuttles to and from Ithaca airport. Unless you are confident about driving in the US, I advice you to avoid flying into NYC and driving to Ithaca. NYC is by far the worst place to drive in the US. But then again, you are from ShangHai so you might be used to crazy driving habits.

As far as SF, it rains a lot during winter. Days are around 60F and the evenings are cold 30-40F.

very usual questions,
1) Walkthru resume
2) Goals, and lot of question in it, he stopped me at every word I said
3) Didnt ask about why Cornell, but i managed to bring it out in some other question
4) Why not IIM and why Cornell?
rest was not specfic but just came out of my responses

The interview last for only 25 mins, he said he is busy with work.......my bad luck

Thanks for your insight.

Ouch, it only lasted 25 minutes and he said he is busy?? If it was a phone interview, then I wouldn't think it is a big deal since they probably have a 25 minute time limit to maintain a strict phone interview schedule. If you traveled to Ithaca to meet them in person and they said that, then I would be concerned.

I know, and if accepted I would do that overnight. But for evaluation purpose?
I do not understand, also because the website says this:

You have two options for providing us with records of your academic work. You may upload scanned image files of your transcripts directly into the online application. Alternatively, you can have your academic records sent to us from the institutions at which you studied. You may download and use our Transcript Request Form. This option must be used for non-U.S. institutions.
If you upload scanned image files and are offered admission, you will be required to provide official transcripts of all previous academic work to verify the information provided in the uploaded files. If there are discrepancies between the self-reported academic work and official records, the offer of admission will be withdrawn. Offers of admission are not binding until academic records are verified.
All international transcripts require an official translation into English by a certified translator. International candidates must submit a certified copy of their diploma indicating the degree received.

Doesn't Italy have internet transcript request system? :-D

I think what they are saying is that you are recommended to upload your transcript to the application. When you send the official transcripts, however, you must use the Transcript Request Form. If I were you, I would just get the transcripts, scan, and upload them.
