I will be driving from NY upstate.
One not so good reason that I am going is that I am applying to Duke as well as UNC. So a single trip gives a dual opportunity

I'm not that surprised! Duke makes it very clear that not coming to campus for an interview is not looked on very highly (unless you are living on the west coast).

Just out of curiosity did you write your own recs because it kind of sounds like you did. If so I'd say have a few more things to worry about...

I'm in for the EA round. Interview on Nov 1 (last day for EA interviews). Will be driving in from Northern Virginia.

I live in Chapel Hill, so interviewing at Fuqua was about the same distance as my commute time to work!

Durham really isn't a bad town. It'll be hard to really see it, though, if you don't have a car - NC in general is not a very pedestrian-friendly state. The Duke campus is absolutely beautiful, so make sure you check that out (especially Duke Chapel). The bars/restaurants near campus are good. As long as you're in NC, definitely try the BBQ - I suggest Bullock's in Durham. It's famous. The Nashua art museum is great, as is Duke Gardens and the botanical gardens. And, of course, get over to see Chapel Hill.

Gaaa, just got some disturbing news from Duke today. Got an email from adcom saying my application is complete and that they have all the info necessary for me to be considered a EA applicant. One thing though: I haven't yet had my interview and won't until the last day of the interview deadline on Nov 1st. Hopefully, they are not thinking that I am not planning on having an interview.

Out of curiosity did anyone get a similiar email saying their status is complete WITHOUT having yet conducted the interview?

I am a Round 1 applicant. But I think there was a question in the app asking whether you have scheduled your intw. If so, at what date. So adcom would know whether you will intw. Looks like you hadn't scheduled yours when you submitted your app.
