Wanted to give a recap on my 2 1/2 visit to Durham for my interview.

AWESOME post-interview report!

Thanks ryguy!

You mentioned that there are four or so places that most students live. Do most students arrive on campus by car or is one of these four places within walking distance (under 20 min)??

Not sure. I will inquire with my friend, next time I chat with him. Are you looking to not have a car there? May be a bit of a chilly walk in the winter-although certainly not Chicago/Kellogg style.

Random question on the topic of the campus...dont know if anyone noticed this in their visit, but how bike-friendly is the place? Did anyone at all go to/from campus on one?

As you can probably guess I fall into the no car demographic.

Just curious. From what I've gathered about Tuck, you'll miss out on a lot if you aren't staying in one of the dorms on campus your first year.

I'm just wondering how Duke compares. It sounds like most people commute....

+1 for the recap - that was great!

I'm visiting Duke next week and am excited ... I've never been so I'm a bit apprehensive about what I've heard about Durham, but isn't Chapel Hill pretty close by? 15-20 min or so?

An alumni at a local event said Duke was very clique-ish, kind of like high school because well - there isn't much to do in Durham. She was married when she went to Duke, and said that her only pet peeve was that type of social environment. Did you get that sense?

ryguy, did u ask the current students as to where they live? I forgot asking that whn i was there. As u mentioned, the areas surrounding Duke are a lil too shady for my taste.
There are three or four main places where students live. My friend lives at Station Nine, as do a lot of students. It's a 7 minute drive (or 30 minute walk) from campus. We went downstairs to the "lobby" around 9:30/10:00 on Sunday night and there happened to be a group of Fuqua students working on a case together. The fact that most students live at only a couple of places makes it is very easy to carpool (and I think there is even preferred parking for those that have a carpool parking pass). Also, it makes it easy to interact with your fellow classmates and to hang out/party/get a designated driver, etc. I don't know about the other facilities, but the Station Nine apartments were super nice. I think they are only 4 years old.

I live in Chapel Hill - about a five minute walk from the main UNC campus. Durham is a ten minute drive away (15, maybe, depending on where you're going). Durham definitely gets a bad rap. It really is not that bad - I can understand why a visitor wouldn't be too hot on it, but trust me, once you "get to know" Durham, it gains a lot of charm. That said, Charlottesville or Palo Alto it ain't. I think the Duke campus is very bike friendly, but you can't rely on it to get from Durham to CH. Although public transportation in this area is pretty good, having a car will be nearly a necessity here.

The American flight from RDU to London has been there for quite a while. Delta just launched a new RDU-Paris link too - which is pretty valuable for my line of work.

The ladies at UNC and Duke (undergrad or otherwise) are Out. Of. Control. If that's on your decisionmaking calculus, then consider that a big plus of this area. That and the BBQ.

To those who interviewed: In the email that you get after you schedule your visit, it says you shouldn't email your resume prior to your visit. If you hand your resume to the interviewer at the start of the interview, does the interviewer take the time to review your resume or dive straight into the questions? Seems weird to me that they wouldn't want to get the resume prior to the interview to have some time to review its content....

Yea it's a bit odd. I handed over my resume when i checked in at 8:00 and then had my interview at 9. My interviewer said he'd reviewed it from 8-9....his questions covered pretty much all parts of my resume so I def got the sense that he'd reviewed it before my interview...

My friend is married and he says that he is having the time of his life. I've seen video footage from the campout that makes me believe him. :-D His wife is a member of Fuqua Partners, which puts on a ton of activities and is a very social group. In fact, my friend and I were out to dinner/hanging out and got back around 10pm on Monday night and she was still out hanging out with her new friends.

I didn't experience a cliquie-ish feeling, but I was only there for 2 1/2 days. Part of this may be because many students waive out of 1 or more core classes (allowing 1Y's to mingle with 2Y's in their first term). Additionally, students are pretty involved in student organizations, which means that students interact with others outside of their 70 person "cluster." Team Fuqua forces people to interact and be social. One can't get through Duke simply by being a brainiac and studying on his/her own.

I didn't experience a clique-ish feeling, but I didn't go to the social event they had lined up (had to catch a plane). I was pretty blunt in asking the student hosts about that and they said there really wasn't a cliquey feeling. One of them mentioned that since there are pockets in durham where ppl live, sometimes there are groups that form around buildings but b/c of the clubs and all, everyone mixes pretty well together. Another dude mentioned that sometimes the int'l students tend to have mini-groups of their own based on the country they're coming from...but to me, that's pretty typical of the schools I've visited...

Ok good! maybe the alumni at our event blew it out of proportion. She made it sound like it was high school.
