Those of you moving across country, how are you planning to do it?
Do it yourself with a uhaul, PODS, hiring movers.... I'm trying to figure this out.
@suchdaddy, I'm thankful that this move will actually be in-state rather than cross country. When I moved from TX to IN, I hired movers, and they were worth every penny. (I'm single, but had some nice furniture that I wanted to keep. Plus I got a corporate discount on the move - knocked the move down from $5000 to a little less than $2000.) I went with Suddath-United (better known as United Van Lines in some parts of the country), and had a decent experience with them (minus a minor broken lamp). The best part was that the movers packed my kitchen. I payed a pretty penny for it, but I thought it was worth it because they packed it fast, and even packed my pantry for me, so that I didn't have to replace many of my canned/dry goods.
Now I'm considering once again who to hire. I have family here, so I could probably get some help from my cousins and their friends. However, I avoid heavy lifting to protect my back, so I'm thinking I'll hire movers once again so that no one will be looking at me expecting me to lift boxes on my own move. For the in-state move, I think it might be quite a bit cheaper. (At least I hope so.) Since I'll officially be unemployed, I can save some money and pack my own kitchen. Sigh...
I'm curious to see what other companies are recommended. I did learn that the summer months are heavier moving months, and some companies get booked early. If you're moving a small apartment as opposed to a large house (like I was), then it's important to at least get your moving quotes and schedule the move as early as you can. Otherwise, you might be waiting on your furniture for a month instead of just a week or two.
Like AnarchyBunny, my brother did a cross-country move from the west coast to TN, and spent nearly the same amount of money just on the truck/gas + car/gas. So, I know that relocating is pretty expensive, and I got a good deal last year.
