question: so, I'm declining my fellowship offer at one school, but am keeping my consortium membership at another member school.....

Do I still fill out the front or just fill out the back that I'm declining, but attending a consortium school and put that on the lines they provided?

I guess I could call and ask, but assumed someone else on the forum may be in a similar situation and already has the answer :-D

Those of you moving across country, how are you planning to do it?
Do it yourself with a uhaul, PODS, hiring movers.... I'm trying to figure this out.

To those that asked about whether to keep their car, I earlier replied that in TX and the midwest, I've found having a car to be a significant convenience that I've decided not to do without. I still hold to this. However, I do think that many students in college towns, even grad students, go without cars because the towns normally have a good transportation system. I've heard that Kelley has a good transit system. Personally, I will still be taking my car and paying for a parking pass for the occasions when it's more convenient for me to drive to campus, to take short trips to Indy, and to visit family and friends in other cities/towns. However, if you were considering going without a car, it wouldn't be impossible. Just wanted to add to my earlier statements.

It looks like I'm moving from Northern New England to VA, and I've calculated moving costs at about $1,250 for truck & gas + our own car/gas. I'm bringing my wife & son though too, so our costs might be a bit higher compared to others. If I was single, I'd bring very little with me to school though & cross country moves are costly, so if you're single just plan on bringing very little with you to school, it'll probably save you money in the short/medium term. Unless you have nice stuff & don't want to let it go.

We're planning on doing the move ourselves with a truck & no movers (we don't really have anything that me & tow dolly can't handle) to save costs.

@suchdaddy, I'm thankful that this move will actually be in-state rather than cross country. When I moved from TX to IN, I hired movers, and they were worth every penny. (I'm single, but had some nice furniture that I wanted to keep. Plus I got a corporate discount on the move - knocked the move down from $5000 to a little less than $2000.) I went with Suddath-United (better known as United Van Lines in some parts of the country), and had a decent experience with them (minus a minor broken lamp). The best part was that the movers packed my kitchen. I payed a pretty penny for it, but I thought it was worth it because they packed it fast, and even packed my pantry for me, so that I didn't have to replace many of my canned/dry goods.

Now I'm considering once again who to hire. I have family here, so I could probably get some help from my cousins and their friends. However, I avoid heavy lifting to protect my back, so I'm thinking I'll hire movers once again so that no one will be looking at me expecting me to lift boxes on my own move. For the in-state move, I think it might be quite a bit cheaper. (At least I hope so.) Since I'll officially be unemployed, I can save some money and pack my own kitchen. Sigh...

I'm curious to see what other companies are recommended. I did learn that the summer months are heavier moving months, and some companies get booked early. If you're moving a small apartment as opposed to a large house (like I was), then it's important to at least get your moving quotes and schedule the move as early as you can. Otherwise, you might be waiting on your furniture for a month instead of just a week or two.

Like AnarchyBunny, my brother did a cross-country move from the west coast to TN, and spent nearly the same amount of money just on the truck/gas + car/gas. So, I know that relocating is pretty expensive, and I got a good deal last year.

I used Peace of mind relocation when moving from Houston to New England and they did a pretty good job. Although, I think with my next move, I'll go down the road of just bringing the bare essentials.

It's official. I'm taking the Consortium Fellowship to Kelley. I look forward to seeing many of you at OP! And for those who chose Kelley, I'll see you at KEW or at orientation, if not before!

This is my first post, but I have been following these conversations for a couple of weeks now. Congrats to all the admits, definitely seems like a great group of people here. I received the consortium fellowship from Tepper and comparing against acceptance to Columbia without much $$. Tepper is very tempting, i'm ready to get out of NYC and excited about the prospects of OP weekend.

@arzad, So you the school that referred you to the Consortium in that final week DID grant you the Consortium Fellowship! Congratulations! You have some great options! I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you.

congratulations! those are great options - I guess it depends what you want to do afterwards and which will help you reach your goals afterwards...but it sure would be tough to turn down a consortium fellowship...good luck!
