Does harvard review its applications in first come first served order?

Posted from my mobile device

I don't know, but I don't think it matters anyway. From what I understand, applicant success is not related to the time the application was submitted.

I guess he's asking that because he has some stuff to get sorted out before adcoms read his application.

I remember reading from a book by Chioma Isiadinso, who used to on the HBS AdCom, that HBS doesn't begin reading application files until after the deadline and they do it in random order.

Hello All,

I'm currently drafting my application for Round 2.

I was put on probation for academic reasons in undergrad and would definitely like to explain that (failed a semester due to illness). I was first planning to explain it in Essay 3a ("What would you like the MBA Admissions Board to know about your undergraduate academic experience?"). However, in the first, Personal Information section of the online application form, they ask me to upload a document explaining the probation.

Is it better for me to explain it in the online form and then pick another option for Essay 3 (thus telling the adcoms more about myself), or is it better to simply write something like "see Essay 3a" in the online form (thus taking special essay space to emphasize the extenuating circumstances behind the problem)?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Does anyone know the split of HBS apps between Rd1 and Rd2? I guess Rd2 gets more apps, but how many more?

From the director's blog it would seem that the best choice is a supervisor. She refers to a "developmental distance" that seems best suited to the relationship between a candidate and their superior:

"I stand by our general advice on recommendations: the most important thing is to choose people who know you well enough to answer the questions we are asking. Many recommendations are well-written and enthusiastic in their praise but essentially full of adjectives and short on actual examples of how your wonderful qualities play out in real life. What we are hoping for are brief recounts of specific situations and how you performed.

We ask for three — and we are fine with several different combinations. It's fine to have all three recommendations come from your current firm/organization. It's fine to have one from a former employer. It's also fine to have one come from someone who has supervised or observed you in a non-work situation — community service or campus leadership, for example. Note that we are not looking for a peer recommendation — we find it most helpful if there is some developmental distance between you and the recommender. The exception to this might be when you have worked on an entrepreneurial venture or project and the only person able to help us understand your involvement is a partner or colleague" (2009)

What's the consensus on best sources for recommendations? I was planning on going with two of the same three I'd used for my previous applications (2 former bosses and 1 current boss) but I just noticed that HBS allows you to use a subordinate or direct report as a recommender. Every other school explicitly prohibits doing so.

I can't imagine a recommendation being taken very seriously if it was written by a direct report, even if it was a former direct report. Am I right here?

Are peers considered a valid option if it's someone who knows you well in a professional setting? I'm having a hard time getting ahold of one of my former bosses so I was leaning towards using the same peer who wrote the required peer recommendation for my GSB app.

for mine, i had a former boss, a current boss and a direct report from my EC activity. I think the direct report can give a different pperspective that bosses cannot necessarily give like how you lead or what kind of person you are to work for.
where does HBS say that they allow rec from direct report?

The applications are NOT reviewed on a first come, first served basis. They begin printing out all applications for review after the deadline - so the review order is just random (i.e not based on submittal time)

perhaps think about risk-taking - any risks you took in your research? e.g. pursuing/writing about an idea that wasn't popular and having it turn out very successfully.

Maybe convincing faculty of the worthiness of your ideas (a quality of leadership is effective communication and being able to get others onboard with your ideas)

I would explain that in the "additional information" essay or addendum or whatever it's called, and use Essay 3 to tell something new and compelling about yourself. Of course you could use that incident as an example of you overcoming adversity or something similar if you wanted to go that route.

where does HBS say that they allow rec from direct report?

They don't ever say it directly, but if you go into the page to register a recommender you'll see two pulldown tabs--one if for the recommender's relationship to you (supervisor, peer/colleague, direct report, etc.) and the other indicates the nature of the relationship (with current employer, former employer, community activity, etc.).

Direct report is one of the options, which I found a little weird.

If you don't have a 'boss' per se i.e. you are the CEO, the founder of a company, or even an EC activity - that allows you to be able to submit recs from a direct report.

From the 3 current students that i know, each has gone with two supervisors and a Peer from community/EC. Might be small sample size, but i took the same route, given i have been in the same job for my entire WE.

Only leadership in academic setting is thought leadership, which shows through quality publications. Not sure if they area interested in that, are they?

For what it's worth, all three of my recs came from supervisors: two from my first job of 3 years, one from my current job of 1.5 years
