good book to talk about in your HBS interview, altho ok to say you have not read it,but read about it.
It would be a good way to segue into your own upbringing.

Tiger Mom: Amy Chua Parenting Memoir Raises American Fears - TIMEJan 20, 2011 ... Tiger Moms: Is Tough Parenting Really the Answer? ... Even before Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Chua's proudly politically incorrect ...

Call me crazy, but for this one I think you are best answering with... YOUR favorite book. One can assume that if you've received an interview you are probably aware of "buzz" books, so I think they are actually looking for a glimpse into who YOU really are. Referencing a book you've never read is not a good idea...these are smart people you are talking to who know when they are being pandered to... and an attempt to steer the conversation will most likely fail.

On the other hand, naming a children's or young adult book could be cute if you use a theme from the book to seg into something that strengthens your profile. Or maybe it's a book your grandfather used to read to you and your grandfather ran the family business.. I have many favorites but I'll probably use "Never Drank the Koolaid" by Toure. It's a collection of essays on culture that helped me shape my style as a writer and desire to be a thought catalyst instead of just report on the facts, the whole "study the greats to become great" saying works well in journalism and it's an adage I apply across disciplines--further the conversation and innovate. I'd rather expand on my favorite book instead of name something that just made the NYT best seller list like Jay-Z's "Decoded." I suppose if you're looking for something "different" naming the memoir of a big rapper turned mogul would do the trick and adcomm has certainly heard of it, it's been all over NPR and major media. But you better have a damn good reason though other than you like his music or saw him on Oprah lol

Sandy - is getting questions about life outside of work and school a good sign or it doesn't mean anything (i.e., literature, movies, hobbies, etc.)?

does not mean anything, usually happens near the end, and may signal they are bored with the usual jive and have come to a conclusion, or sometimes just interested in what you say. As noted many times, interviews can cause damage but not really help yo that much. Damage= not reading any books, saying book and then not being able to talk about it, or sure, saying you love Porn and just read a really hot book called MBA Booty Call, which was funny and struck you as true.

Final invites do go out on 2/16 (Wednesday), though it's expected that most of them will be dings.

Is there any support or historical precedent for this idea or is it just speculation? I'm hoping there's still a chance!

You'll get an email either way. Once the emails are sent out, the online status of your application will change as well.

I don't think we know that to be a fact. Dee's email said:

* We started sending out interview invitations on February 4 and will continue to do so until February 16. Interview invitations will arrive via email.
* On February 16, all candidates not invited to interview will receive either a decision indicating that "we are unable to offer you a place in the Class of 2013" or an invitation to join our waitlist.
* Decision notification for interviewwed candidates is on March 29.

Says they will continue to send invites until Feb 16th. Probably best to just wait a couple of house and not stress about it.

How's this for overthinking...

Sure, if we don't have an invite now, our odds are pretty slim (ie there are only 15-30 slots for thousands of applicants). But HBS has already hand-picked hundreds of all-stars, significantly weakening the uninterviewed applicant pool. So with these final interviews today, we can take solace in knowing that we are marginally more competitive for these last few slots than we have been at any point in the process.

so basically, yeah, we're not going to hbs this year.

If you are waitlisted, how does the process work from there with HBS? Did any R1 HBS Waitlisters get invited for interviews during R2?
