Hi all, I'm a new member here (lurking for months). I wanted to share some quick thoughts on my recent HBS interview since all of your posts have been so helpful.
As I think someone else said, the interview wasn't as stressful as I had anticipated. The interviewer was very friendly and pleasant. Although she did interrupt a couple of times, it didn't feel like she was challenging me - the time just went by so quickly that I think she wanted to keep things moving.
A few questions I was asked:
- Compare your company to competitors A and B.
- Tell me about X [from my data form]. Persuade me to do X.
- What books do you read? [no follow-up questions]
- Where do you get your news? What story are you following?
- Tell me about Y difficult experience from your essay. What was the low point? [I explained it] Then what happened?
Ultimately there were no real "gotcha" questions. The questions seemed to fall into two buckets: follow-up questions about my application, and questions asking me to give an opinion on a topic related to my application (e.g. persuade me to do X). I think for the "opinion" questions it doesn't matter what you say, but just that you come up with a reasonable response. I think they want to see if you can confidently give an opinion (as in a case discussion). Also, she did leave time for one question at the end, so it would be good to have something in mind just in case.
If I could go back and do this all over again, I would definitely spend less time worrying about and preparing for the interview. The most helpful thing I did was read through my application, think about the questions I was hoping she wouldn't ask, and then decide what I would say in response. She didn't actually ask any of those questions, but it just made me feel more confident. Ultimately, since you can't prepare for every question, I think it's most important to go in well-rested and as relaxed as possible.
I hope that is helpful. Thanks again to everyone who has shared thoughts on here, it's really been invaluable. Best of luck to everyone.
