Ms. Leopold asked applicants in one of her blog entries not to sweat over a few extra words. I am wondering how much is a ‘few extra’. I finished the first draft of the Mistake essay and it comes to 424 words, and I don’t want to have to chop it further. Do you think I’ll get away with a 5% overboard?

at the prospective students day i attended, the same exact question came to an adcom member. he tried to dance around it, saying that they were busy reading thousands of essays (it's true - 4 essays x 9000 applicants = 36000 essays!), and that you should definitely try to adhere to the word limits when possible. the student kept trying to ask if there was a finite limit of words he could go over (10 words? 50 words?). the adcom started to get annoyed and basically just told him to adhere to the limits. i'd read this as a few (5 or 6 words) is probably ok, but once you start going past that, it shows an unwillingness to abide by the limits, and would probably reflect poorly on you. instead, cut out a few words here and there and bring it closer to the limit.

thx shadowsjc :)

Well we know for sure that they don't actually count the number of words on each essay. but they can tell if it's gone beyond the limit. i think it might be okay to get like 10 words overboard. pity though, a lot of us might have been saved a lot of misery. ;)

Hi fellow applicants,

I had my interview in Paris today. Time to give back to this rich source of information;-)

As posted by earlier applicants, the questions were tailored to my applicantion and CV, but also quite similar to the one's you can find around the net:

- What did you learn from your undergrad education?
- How did the company culture at company X differ from company Y you have been working with?
- Why an MBA? Why HBS?
- What will you bring to the HBS program?
- What are the main things you would like to learn at HBS?
- What will be the next steps and challenges after your graduation from HBS?
- Is there anything else you want us to consider for your application to the program?

No it's time to wait. Best the luck to everyone!

Cheers.

Hi all,

Just a quick question(s) for the applicants who interviewed on campus. Are there any variations in the letter from Dee? Wondering if in particular the text "you are one of the strongest applicants in the pool" is consistent across all letters or specific to some. I would assume the former (i.e. by their very nature the people being interviewed are the strongest in the applicant group) rather than the latter, but just wanted to double check.

mine said "'you are extremely lucky to interview, since you are one of the weakest applicants in the pool." man, you must be a shoe-in with a letter like that!

in all seriousness, i'm 99% sure everyone got the same letter.

I interviewed the week Dee was gone and my letter said something along the lines of "sorry I couldn't be here" and "don't sweat the interview".

Nothing awe inspiring but I did get a nice pen. Score!

For those of you still anxiously waiting - a friend of mine just received an invite to interview in a hub city. So - perhaps he was part of the "50" that Dee was talking about.

I had my interview today and I agree with everyone else - it was very relaxed and did not have any unexpected or grilling questions
the interviewer was extremely nice
asked questions specific to my application -
- how i balanced extra-currics with classes in college
- what i learned at co. X that i've carried over to co. Y
- what was the transition like from co. X to co. Y
- what did i learn at co. Y
- opinion about industry trends (specific to my industry)
- how i would differentiate myself from other consultants
- example of a time when i had to work with a challenging group of people
- my long term career goals
- what challenges do i expect as i go about my trying to achieve my goals

In the end she left 5 minutes for questions from my side or anything else that i wanted to add..
all in all it was a nice experience - and yes I got a harvard pen! :)

I'm getting ready to start off with my R2 essays, and had a question for the fine crew on this thread. Is there any advantage to submitting the HBS early (say a month in advance), assuming one has not rushed his/her app?

Ms. Leopold has clearly, and repeatedly stated that the HBS Adcom does not open the submission prior to the closing date. They do however advise you to submit early enough to save yourself from last minute rush and subsequent server hang-ups. That said, it is better to revise and re-revise all essays till the last moment. You may want to have someone else look up the essays as well. U'd be surprised to see how many typos you've missed. I think five to three days before the deadline is a good time to submit the application.

i dont think there's an advantage... just submit when you're ready (but not on the day of the deadline, if at all possible). turnpike gives good advice - do it a few days before.

I have heard that in general, its better to submit a few days early because when an adcom member gets a stack of applications after the deadline, you will be on top of that stack. I am not sure if that's just a rumor though.

Well it's plausible that if you apply late enough, your application will lie at the top end of the stack, if at all that is how the submissions are arranged. But I'm not sure how the screenshot of their page looks like, so won't hazard a guess as to how the stack comes across. Assuming they have 9000 applicants this year (no, please, no, please, please let it more like 5000) that means 36,000 essays and 27,000 recommender essays. That's not the job of a single person. I doubt that the team of application reviewers will wait till after the deadline to be handed their quota of applications. Perhaps they have an automated system that channels different application to different reviewers the moment they are submitted. That might be a good thing because then the applications may end up with those who are well versed with dealing with applicants from particular geographical area. And then post the deadline day, the reviewers can log in and access the submitted applications. In any case since the applications will be reviewed as different stacks there is no guarantee that someone will not end up on top.

And by the way, as far as I know, each Adcom spends like 20 minutes on an application. That's not much time really. So please try to stand out as much as possible right in the first sentence. Oh, and Ms. Leopold said that there's no particular order in which the Adcom may review the essays. So begin each essay with a bang!

Like the BA baggage system. It pays to be last on the plane. "Priority baggage" my ass - it's LIFO.

LOL. I second that. I have an elite card with Star Alliance - I never get my bags first...
