I have received confirmation mail after submitting application and they mentioned that by 10th October school will let me know their decision about application

1. TMAY
2. Follow-up questions on my perspectives on market opportunities in Africa (from what I mentioned in the essay)
3. Most challenging/analytical project + a few follow-up questions
4. What I enjoyed about my role in a project my referee mentioned in the LOR
5. What is my process of analyzing/tackling a problem & example
6. Do I enjoy the commercial aspects of my work and why?
7. TMAT when the project failed
8. My motivations for starting my own consulting company & leaving a secure job
9. Joys and pains of running your own company
10. How do I secure clients, and what percentage is referral vs cold outreach?
11. What other schools have I applied for, what influenced my decision to apply & how IESE ranks relative to the rest
12. ⁠Questions for the interviewer (last 10min of the hour)

The questions asked were very specific to the applicant’s profile/experiences.

The interviewer had read the essays, resume, and LOR in great detail, as the follow-up questions were asked from all three.

Was it particularly difficult this year? I got rejected with a 750 classic score. I’m a consultant and a competitive chess player. Not even getting an interview invite really shattered all my confidence.

Sorry you had to go through that Jarvis07 ! You have a good (classic) GMAT score, which is at the high end of IESE’s published range. That should have put you in a good position. The fact that you are a consultant + competitive chess player gives good non-academic differentiators, but there are other factors that too that the adcoms look for. However, it's not unheard of for applicants with strong scores + good experience to not get interview invites.

Reasons might be:
Competition from profiles that “tick every box”, consulting + high scores + international exposure + strong essays/recommendations/ fit. Sometimes, multiple applicants with similar or even slightly weaker scores but stronger stories get in over others. Good storytelling around why this school, why now, how you’ll contribute, and many other things is the key, apart from having a good GMAT. Essays, recommendations, with gaps in leadership/impact, lack of clear goals, or lack of clarity in the application may hurt. Sometimes they limit admissions from overrepresented segments or those with redundant experiences.

You are definitely not alone in being rejected with a 750. It sucks, but the data and historical discussions confirm that even top scores don’t guarantee an interview. Sometimes, just tweaking essays, sharpening your “why school / why now” story, or improving your application packaging (resume/recommendation/storytelling) is enough. Take some time off and then take a fresh look at your essays, get them checked/ reviewed. If you are targeting other schools in Round 2, and if you'd like, please feel free to reach out to us.
