Sure thing!

My conversation with the interviewer was via video-call and lasted for about 45 minutes. It was a very candid and low-pressure conversation with the interviewer seeming genuinely interested in my reasons to do an MBA from this particular school, my networking abilities and also my plans post-MBA (Whether I plan to stay in Australia or move back to my home country). She asked me for examples of how I networked well because it is a necessary skill for success in any MBA program and particularly so in Australia. There was also an opportunity for me to add an emotional dimension to the interview as I was able to steer the conversation towards my family and spoke passionately about them. I would treat it as a normal respectful conversation with a potential employer/stranger.

I used the following template to prepare for my interview. Helpful to keep it handy on a word doc so you can quickly refer to it in your interview.

1) Introduce yourself

2) Walk me through your resume...work details

3) What are your goals (short and long term and how they are connected to your work ex)

4) Why this program

5) Why this school (mention specifics) as well as any networking/research you have done

6) Give an example of: a) Leadership; b) Teamwork; c) Achievement; d) Failure; e) Big Challenge that you have overcome; f) Failure...

7) Prepare 3-4 stories to answer all these behavioural questions using the STAR Format (SET the situation, then mention the big actions you TOOK, consequent RESULTS. Also mention the LEARNING inculcated as a result for behavioural questions, you should use STAR stories (essentially prepare 5-6 stories where you are the hero - state the situational context (relevant to the behaviour/situation asked for), and then highlight the ACTIONS you took, consequent RESULTS + LEARNING. You can google "Star interview question and answers sample" or something along those lines.

8) 2 Strengths and 2 Weaknesses backed up with relevant examples

9) Do you have any questions for us (2 or more specific questions showing your research/understanding of the program)

Hope this helps. Good luck for your applications!

Thanks for the details, they were really helpful. Can you let me know how much is your work experience?

My interview was initially scheduled at 4.30AM but a very nice lady at MBS asked me if it was uncomfortable with the time, and upon my suggestion re-scheduled it to 9.30AM.

The interview was with John Gurskey, Director of Career Mgmt Team at MBS. He made it clear the outset that it wouldn't be an interview but a two-way conversation, where we both can ask question as we go along.

So his questions were:
About you?
Why MBA?
Why MBS?
Why consulting? (my ST goals were to move to consulting)
What's your plan-B if you don't land up in consulting? (very important Qs, this I've been asked now in every B-school interview)
Planning to settle in Australia after MBA?

Then he proceeded to tell me very clearly about expected strengthening of immigration laws, and that I'll need to extend my MBA by over 6 months to be eligible for sponsorship, and which visas I can get.

I asked: What should I do to strengthen my case?
He told me to be resilient with job market, which can mean taking a job that offers sponsorship over your dream job.

We need to network a lot in Australia. Tell me an occasion where you solved work related scenario where you demonstrated networking?

I asked: what are other opportunities in Australia that I'm not aware of?
He told me about working with provincial government on a 2-year bond, other companies who readily offer sponsorship etc.

After a conversation around these subjects, he told me that adcom will contact you in next couple weeks with next steps.
Bye Bye!

Summary: A candid conversational interview/information exchange that lasted about 20-25 minutes.

Hi everyone, has anyone heard from MBS if they are still going to compare the GMAT online scores to the GMAT scores from test centres?

Yeah sure.

I submitted my application for R3 on 30 March. Received interview invite on 16 April (around lunch time).

Interview was scheduled for 45 minutes.

Basic questions:

- Why MBA now;
- Why MBS MBA;
- Walk me through your resume;
- Tell me more about your current role;
- What's the reason behind each job change;

With my circumstance, as I've only lived and worked in Sydney, he asked a few questions as to whether I'm willing to settle in Melbourne after graduation, if there's good job opportunity.

Then we just chatted in general about the COVID-19 and the uncertainty about this intake.

The interview lasted 35 minutes. No tricky question. Hope this assists :-)

Hey I applied R3 with the extended deadline but haven’t heard anything about the year being cancelled? Did they send out an email to say the full MBA is cancelled for 2020? Thanks

Dear Esteban,

I hope that you and your family are safe and well during these challenging times.

Melbourne Business School has been closely monitoring the impact of COVID-19 across the globe. Many countries, including Australia, have introduced strict travel restrictions and there is no certainty as to when these restrictions will be eased. It is also unlikely that international students will be granted a visa. As a consequence, we have decided to cancel this year’s full-time MBA program.

This is extremely disappointing. While we have successfully transitioned to delivering our part-time and executive MBA programs by a virtual classroom, we have determined that the full-time MBA will not adapt well to an online mode because of the intensity.

So, what does this mean for you?
If you would like to be considered for admission in 2021, please let us know so that we can include you in relevant communications regarding application assessment and timelines.

If you have any questions about the details, we are available to help you work through your specific circumstances. Please contact Nicole Mina via (+61 3) 9349 8703 or by email at n.mina@mbs.edu.

Yours sincerely
