Re: Calling all MIT Fall 2009 applicants! [#permalink]
Hey guys,

I know MIT has said to keep the content of our essays to the past 3 years. Do you think they might be a little more lenient for the 4th essay? I was going to talk about what I learned from a challenging time (like some other schools ask about), but this experience is more like 8 years old. Since it's the optional essay I don't know if they will still want to hear about stuff from the last 3 years only, or if we can reach back further for this one.

Does anyone have thoughts on this or insight from talking to an Adcom member?

Thanks!

8 years ago seems like a long time but if it is something majorly significant in your life I don't see it as terrible.

At a recent MIT event, the adcom present hinted that the timeline rules for the optional essay might be more flexible than for the others, assuming it's something of great significance. I might be misinterpreting it though.

advice may be a bit late for round 1...but I had the same issue. Spoke to an adcom member who told me it was ok- as long as you can show significant lessons that you draw on today..it has to somehow tie in with the present.. make sure you tie it in strongly to how it has shaped who you are etc..for what its worth..i changed it to a more recent but less impressive story.

Agreed. The essays were unique, to say the least, but I think the simple application was very nice. More spaces for job history would have been nice though.

side note: the admissions office folks are really nice. my computer froze when the cover leter was uploading and only partially uploaded - they let me just email it to them and added it to my app this morning. woo.
