Without using any technology,it would be very clear when the count exceeds by 200 300 words. My question was if they cared for 30 40 words. I doubt their font specification has anything to do with word count, that is more readability. I think.

But since S says cannot exceed 1800 words they may be stricter on this versus others..

Agreed. I'm not sure if they would care or not either but if they wanted to be strict about it, it wouldn't take much for them to perform the check. Personally, I don't think a few words over would hurt your application but you never know... Why take the chance? Especially considering even the best essays probably have a couple of sentences of fluff.

I think the fonts are for readability as well but just trying to point out it makes it even easier to check with standard fonts. :)

As in haas where you copy paste the essays into boxes, the words are easily counted, in fact the other areas of that application actually have boxes where they won't let you enter more words, so why not make it all like that? Saves time with all this word PDF etc. We don't care about formatting anyway it is more the content...

Just a thought...

Not sure if you had formatting issues with the Haas forms. Ugh, that was such a pain! It also counted 2 consecutive spaces as a word (which I do at the start of every sentence) so I had to go and delete my extra space for every sentence!

Valid point though, aside from the side effects of the Haas forms... :(

Yes I had issues with haas, but that is a whole another topic and with booth too.. hopefully next time it will all be fixed.. But the point as you noted was why not prohibit people from writing beyond your specific limit, it can be done! And that eliminates all guessing...

submitted..... finallly. Its amazing how I've been proof-reading and re-proof-reading for the past 6 hours!
But I do somehow feel confident about this application.. fingers crossed now!

on a side note... i did eventually bring it down to 1798 words. Simply could not risk it.

I got dinged without an interview, but when I visited Stanford about 6 weeks after the submission deadline I met a few people who had just gotten their interview invites a few days prior. This was about a month before the R1 decision announcement date.

Talk about cutting it close, I just submitted mine.

1860 words total (59 of those were the essay prompts themselves), I hope the AdCom realizes that :)

Now is the time to cross my fingers and tape them that way till I get in!

I just labeled them as "Essay 1" "Essay 2" "Essay 3C" and "Essay 3D".
Hopefully that doesn't result in a ding

Lol, I don't think that matters. I love it how people obsess over inconsequential details (I am one of them).
