What attracts you to McCombs?

In no way am I knocking McCombs. As a matter of fact, this is a school I'm considering (among others). But I'm curious as to what some people find appealing. Typically, most top schools are known for something. What can you say about McCombs?

Lagomez,

I don't know how well I would fare in admission for other top schools, but I can say for certain that McCombs is my top choice. I plan on entering the growing field of alternative energy and aside from *maybe* Stanford, McCombs is the best. McCombs already has a close relationship with Energy, it's located in a city that is unique in its commitment to clean energy, and it has an Energy Finance concentration.

On top of all that, Dean Gilligan is taking the school into a new direction towards becoming especially known for energy and alternative energy. He has proposed a new energy center and creating joint programs for dual degrees related to the field.

For me and my career aspirations McCombs offers much more than any other top school can, and I would be stoked to go to school back in the great state of Texas! Especially Austin - an awesome city. I don't know about how McCombs appeals to other applicants except for those who chose it as a safety, but it is highly ranked and respected so if this is your safety then you probably kick ass. Or think you do!

thanks for the feedback. I'm not really into energy and obviously McCombs has more to offer than energy. It's nice to get a different perspective.

Interviewed on campus Friday, and I agree that the questions were very straight forward. The interview went well, so I've got my fingers crossed. I felt like the lunch and information session that I attended following the interview was more of a fit test than the interview itself. Very impressive career services center, and it seems like the students are getting quality jobs and internships. If you want to live in Texas, I do not think you can go wrong at McCombs. The Dallas and Houston alum networks are very strong.

If you go to McCombs, you will never be part of the HBS/Chicago/Yale/Wharton network in Dallas or Houston. However, there are a lot of Texas employers that won't hire an Ivy Leaguer, which is different than most other places. It just depends which network fits you best.

I am a little nervous about the exposure to the energy industry. If that sector has issues, that could really hurt recruiting at McCombs. A larger portion of students went into the energy industry last year. I'm probably overanalyzing, but my earning potential got hammered by the credit crisis. That makes me a little cautious.

Does anyone know if McCombs rolls out their decisions slowly or do they do it all in one shot?

Hi all,

I'm looking to expand my school list a little bit, and I'm starting to get a lot more interested in McCombs. In particular, I've heard Austin is an awesome place to live. Are there any current McCombs students on this thread?

Hey guys, any idea how the "rolling" application system works? I missed the R1 deadline by one lousy day due to a postal service screwup with my transcripts

So when can I realistically expect a reply?

The R1 deadlines is really just a suggested date. Texas reviews the applications as they come in, so there will be no delay for you. Usually, it takes 1 to 2 weeks to hear back about an interview and then 4 to 6 weeks after your interview to hear back on a decision.

Hmmm.

I spoke to them on the phone while I was dealing with this fiasco, and they said I "will have to go in with the January applicants", which implied something different.

Oh well. Guess I'll find out soon enough!

I'm not a current McCombs student, but I went to UT for undergrad. I can attest to Austin being a great place to live for 4 years. And Texas sports is always fun to follow, because we win almost all the time.

Thanks for the feedback, asimov. I must admit that although sports are obviously not the greatest reason to pick a b-school, Texas' sports would actually be a huge bonus to me. I am a crazy sports fan (primarily football and basketball), and I went to Boston University for undergrad which has no football team and a terrible basketball team. I'm from San Francisco and follow the 49ers and Warriors religiously, but I've never been able to really get into college football or basketball because I don't have a strong allegiance to any team.

Did you find that Austin feels like a college town? From what I hear, it is a good balance of college town but also "real" city, which is one of the things I like. I'm not applying to quite a few other schools because I don't want to go somewhere that is primarily college-town only (ie Cornell, Dartmouth, Yale, etc). Also, as an undergrad, what did you perceive as the main strengths/weaknesses of McCombs in terms of curriculum/faculty? I'm currently an event planner and looking to career switch into Consulting, to give some brief background.

Austin is what you want to make it to be. If you stay close to campus, it has a college town feel to in, which appeals to me. However, if you live a couple miles out, it’s a vibrant city with a lot to do (the campus very close to downtown). Austin is famous for its live music. There are two major annual music festivals: South By Southwest (SXSW) and Austin City Limits (ACL). It’s a big outdoor sports town: Lance Armstrong calls it home. And UT sports is HUGE, especially football. In football, we are always in contention for the national championship. In basketball, we always make the playoffs. In baseball, we won quite a few national champions and always make the College World Series. In swimming, we have Olympic swimmers on the team, as well as the head coach for the Olympic team. If you are sports fan, you would love UT.

For me, life outside of school is almost as important as the school itself. I much rather spent the 2 years happy. One thing that’s important for me in school selection is location and weather. Austin is warm year around. For those Southern, who are not used to trekking through snow and ice or shoveling snow, Austin is ideal. After all, most of the academic year up north will be cold.

I wasn’t a business major in undergrad. But I did take some classes in the business school. Usually for the non-business majors, they give you the newer associate professors or lecturers. However, I had some classes taught by former associate dean (if I remember correctly) and a very funny business law professor. The professors are generally very helpful during office hours, even with large undergraduate classes. My friends in the Business Honors Program (BHP) had much more intimate relationships with their professors. I think BHP has a MBA style learning environment.

I think it would be wise to expand your school list, since the bay area schools are extremely hard to get into due the small class sizes. As far as job opportunities goes, all the major consulting companies recruit at McCombs. I know a couple of BHPer (undergrad) who are working at Bain (admittedly, I do not know very many business majors).

Alright, so I had my interview today which went well. It took place over lunch at a restaurant in Richmond, VA and was pretty casual. I didn't have any trouble answering questions and hitting my main points, and there were no tricky questions. In fact, all of the questions were predictable - noting questions that others have posted in this forum and elsewhere.

The questions I remember:

Why an MBA/McCombs/now
What are characteristics of a strong team?
In your job, when have you worked with teams? What did you do to help strengthen them?
Describe leadership experience? What did you learn from it?
Have you ever dealt with a difficult coworker/subordinate? Describe.
What do you think will be your greatest challenge during your MBA?
How can you benefit your classmates and McCombs?
What have you learned about yourself during the application process.

We also talked at length about the field I want to go into, my work experience, and about her experience living in Austin and attending the school.

I don't know how much weight these interviews have on the admission decision - does anyone else know? I guess it doesn't matter much anymore - now it's just back to the waiting game! I hope the decisions come out at least by mid-December.
