WL here, after interview. Seeing as I got into Duke and Cornell with $ I'm feeling pretty okay about it.

is anyone here deciding between Berkeley and UCLA? I am still waiting to see if/ how much money both schools give me but i was wondering how people viewed each school. I currently work in investment banking and wanted to stay in that general field. I know both schools are not as strong in finance recruiting as the east coast schools but compared to each other, does anyone know if there is a real difference? Any information would be appreciated.

Berkeley is supposed to be stronger in terms of banking, especially with the proximity to SF, which is more of a banking hub than L.A.

I posted a response to this on the Berkeley thread.

I just have to ask - if you work in banking and want to stay in banking, why do you want to go to b-school?? Even if there's not a chance of promotion at your firm wouldn't it make more sense to lateral elsewhere? Just seems like a waste..

I've been seeing a lot of posts here for people who are indecisive about UCLA and other schools. My mentors who have been through b-school gave me the following advice:

- Pick a school where you want to work. So if you want to stay in California, going to an East Coast school makes it harder to get notice of local internships and jobs since most companies recruit locally.

- UCLA vs. USC. For an MBA, UCLA is much higher in the rankings for a reason. It's an established program where USC is still growing. If you were a Trojan undergrad, no point in going to the same place for grad school. If you weren't, I think UCLA MBA still holds more clout.

Re-waitlisted from R1.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Fuqua vs UCLA (Marketing, Media)

For me (focusing on those two areas and waitlisted at both of those schools):

Fuqua Marketing > UCLA Marketing
UCLA Media > Fuqua Media

Thank you MovieMarketer. That's the reason I'm having trouble deciding between the two.

Speaking of UCLA versus other peer schools, I found that just one (1) out of approximately eighty (80) folks in the "GMatclub '11: Where are you going this Fall" thread is planning to go to UCLA!!!! Even that one person is a FEMBA applicant. I know GMatclub is not a great representative sample of the entire applicant pool out there, but still......

Although UCLA is my top choice among the schools I applied to and will go there in a heart beat if admitted from waitlist, I can't help wonder why it has such a comparatively lower yield among the top 15/20 schools. Anyone??

I feel that UCLA is a school a lot of people apply to that have reach schools that are in the top 10. At the same time, those people probably are eligible for scholarships at slightly lower-ranked schools. That, and being in the LA-area would be my guess for the low yield.

I attribute it to the selection bias. For example, I will matriculate at UCLA(already paid the deposit) but I have not participated in the poll.

Yeaahh...i'm going to say those are far from accurate. they only show 1 person going to Haas and I've already met 20+ of them. I don't think you should bother with these stats at all

Curious why being in LA would contribute to a lower yield?

Nice weather almost all year around, near the beaches, laid-back attitude, and etc.

How can LA not drive people away?

I grew up in Southern California by the way... Looking forward to returning to the area!

kelea: Where are you heading to, if you don't mind sharing?

To those folks who are admitted and who are in the waitlist that have decided to go elsewhere: Please decline the offer as early as you possibly can so that new spots open up for waitlisted candidates like myself who are dead-set on going to UCLA, if admitted. Thanks in advance.
