has wharton historically waitlisted so many people in r1/interviews? i think that's the real question here.

conspiracy: going by what the current students told us, it seems as though a lot of what they said did not happen. normally gmat club is a fairly good indication of the larger pool and only one person on this forum received an admit at 9pm. as of now, he would be the only person the 'network of volunteers' would call next week. The optimist in me says that it was a technical glitch and they want to call every applicant before changing their status online - and that these calls will go out next week. The pessimist in me says adcom has taken a radically new path this year and will now go on vacation for 2 weeks as per their blog. We have seen with interviews this year that adcom is capable of doing anything.

overall, i think this is a surprising turn of events if they have indeed moved so many people to R2. i would be very nervous if i were a R2 applicant - dealing with all the hype around interviews as well as competing against a huge waitlist.

I have been waitlisted as well. Seems like a VERY high number this year. Is this typical? anyone has any insights? How many WL candidates get an acceptance finally?

Totally agree. No matter what the school plans to do, it will have huge consequences. Maybe that's why they delayed the decision release till 9pm? A lot of considerations must have been on their mind... Let's just hope they will take a more rational action...this time....

I'm an R2 applicant and I was actually thinking the opposite. Yes, there's more competition but it also opened up more seats. I was thinking half the class would be filled by now. I guess it's the optimist in me.

On the other hand, I have a feeling more accepts will go out before 3/24. I can't imagine Wharton keeping you guys in agony for that long. I feel for you guys though. Wish you the best and hope you find out what's going on soon!

any diehard Candide-types still defending this adcom????
Maybe so many are WL b.c. adcom is still reading those word-for-word interview transcript faxes fr. alums??? And then double checking if your score on say Q2 was a 3.4 or a 3.65-- this is beginning to remind me of the Bush-Gore Florida recount, except this time hanging chads have been replaced with hanging-around WLers.

Last year, Wharton did WL a large number of applicants, but not close to what it seems like they did this year. Every admissions consultant and adcom member at the top schools will tell you that even though the number of applicants vary from year to year, the quality of applicants remains relatively constant, as does the percentage that ultimately gets interviewed/admitted. So I'm not sure what the reason is for the indecisiveness. Maybe it is fallout from the IB/PE bashing at Harvard/Stanford, but I don't think that is likely. Hopefully some people will talk to the adcom and current students and get some insight in the coming weeks.

Just talked with an alumnus, but no clear specifics. will keep digging I guess...

I was waiting for Sandy's take on this actually, especially in light of the admissions result at Harvard. More importantly, what's everyone's plans now?

Add me to WL. Somewhat in a bind... got into my #2 but Wharton is definitely my top choice. We will see come March 24 I suppose. Still hanging onto a shred of hope here.

Hey guys,

I was getting a play by play from my friends who had not received an update at 4pm, so I'm a bit surprised why decisions were released so late given what we were initially informed. We haven't been filled in as to why there are so many WL applicants or why decisions were released at 9pm, but hopefully we'll get clarification in the upcoming weeks.

But hang in there! For what it's worth, I got off the WL last year. I also know quite a few of my classmates who got off the R1 WL prior to & on the next round's notification date. This isn't official policy, but from my speculation, it might be a way to manage yield (i.e. someone doesn't accept their offer and so they give you x amount of time to accept). I also have a feeling that there is some mechanism that ranks the WL, since the people who got off with me were also really strong candidates that were admitted to multiple schools. Perhaps, this maybe why it took so long to release decisions--they might have been ranking the WL.

Long story short (and from personal experience), a WL at Wharton isn't the end of the road like it is at other schools (i.e. Tuck and Stanford who released everyone from their WL last year)--there's still hope!

and the bell rings: ding ding ding...rejecteddddddddd.

freaking wharton. i'm really frustrated right now, especially after being WL last year. I was very disappointed with the entire app process this year for wharton, especially how inconsistent the interviews were conducted across the board but ohh well, their loss. also, im not believing this whole "reapplicant friendly" stuff....anyways good luck to all, any school would be fortunate to have us. let's go kick some ass at whatever school or job we will be pursuing...

From what I recall, Wharton often WL's lots of people. Some may think it is due to managing their numbers, WL people and then see if they stick it out and try to get off. Application volumes are volatile year to year depending on a huge variety of factors, so to combat this some schools use large WLs. If application volume is way down in R2 then there may be a lot of movement off the WL if volume is up then it will be a lot harder to get off.

Admits dont always make a lot of sense, people may get into Stanford but dinged by Columbia and Booth. If you are WL'ed at Wharton chances are in your favor of getting into another top school. It may not be your top choice now but you probably will love your time and be rewarded in the end.

Could it be possible (and this is purely speculation) that they simply ran out of time and decided to put all the remaining applicants on the waitlist rather than hold off releasing decisions? No can point a finger at ad com for putting too many people on the waitlist - thats really their prerogative - but they would definitely be called out if they didn't release all decisions by the 17th.

Also, I know one person who has been admitted but did not receive a call so I don't think it is related to calling applicants before updating their status.

I believe there was one person on this forum who did get an admit without a phone call.

I would hope that they ran out of time and put everyone on the waitlist, which could be the reason for the delayed decision releases. And adcom will gradually work through the waitlist over the next month and start getting people off the waitlist.

I admit that it is absolutely adcom's prerogative how they choose to run this process. But when they make radical changes (interview, waitlists etc.), I think it would reflect well on adcom if they kept the applicant community better informed about these changes.
