Hey guys,
I was getting a play by play from my friends who had not received an update at 4pm, so I'm a bit surprised why decisions were released so late given what we were initially informed. We haven't been filled in as to why there are so many WL applicants or why decisions were released at 9pm, but hopefully we'll get clarification in the upcoming weeks.
But hang in there! For what it's worth, I got off the WL last year. I also know quite a few of my classmates who got off the R1 WL prior to & on the next round's notification date. This isn't official policy, but from my speculation, it might be a way to manage yield (i.e. someone doesn't accept their offer and so they give you x amount of time to accept). I also have a feeling that there is some mechanism that ranks the WL, since the people who got off with me were also really strong candidates that were admitted to multiple schools. Perhaps, this maybe why it took so long to release decisions--they might have been ranking the WL.
Long story short (and from personal experience), a WL at Wharton isn't the end of the road like it is at other schools (i.e. Tuck and Stanford who released everyone from their WL last year)--there's still hope!

conspiracy: going by what the current students told us, it seems as though a lot of what they said did not happen. normally gmat club is a fairly good indication of the larger pool and only one person on this forum received an admit at 9pm. as of now, he would be the only person the 'network of volunteers' would call next week. The optimist in me says that it was a technical glitch and they want to call every applicant before changing their status online - and that these calls will go out next week. The pessimist in me says adcom has taken a radically new path this year and will now go on vacation for 2 weeks as per their blog. We have seen with interviews this year that adcom is capable of doing anything.
overall, i think this is a surprising turn of events if they have indeed moved so many people to R2. i would be very nervous if i were a R2 applicant - dealing with all the hype around interviews as well as competing against a huge waitlist.
