Got dinged by Chicago ... surprising considering I got interview invites from Wharton, Stanford and LBS ... And my Chicago application was strong and I felt I had a strong candidacy. I just think Chicago talks too much about the transparency of their process, but I don't see it from where I come.

Compared to HBS, Chicago is a magnifying glass!!!

I think some schools have specific preferences for certain profiles. That would explain why Stanford/Wharton/LBS invited you to interview and Chicago did not.

I agree with you ... Based purely on factual data (S/W are def more selective than Chicago), I should have atleast gotten an interview call at the least. I can only imagine so called "fit" being the only reason I was not invited ... which makes me doubt the transparency of their process. If you call me for an interview and then judge I am just not the "Chicago" type, thats acceptable.

I come from a top-tier consulting firm and would like to return to top-tier consulting, which seems like a good match for Chicago too. Well, I just need to take it in the right spirit and move on ... It just was not meant to be ... Good luck to all the rest of you guys interviewing.

Random things happen. There could be "quota" issues, maybe your recommendation letters were not that robust. I am guessing. I can tell you, I am an international who have several friends applying this year and I saw weird things happening at top schools.

I agree man ... my recos were very very strong, but in any case I will never figure out why .... I know that Booth is a great school and most people who got invites and acceptances are worthy.

Being transparent on the process doesn't necessary mean that they will let you peep into their black box-type decision-making process. I think that the admissions process at Booth is very professional in the sense that they try to minimize the amount of BS in their communications. For example, if they say "we are going to issue interviews from day x through day Y" that is what you see. Compare that to Stanford where they issue 90% of invites on the first week and keep saying that they will keep inviting people while that is at least inaccurate.

They do a good job of keeping applicants informed on what their steps are. That is really different from other schools. Having a mid decision date really helps in lowering expectations and avoiding false expectations. MIT in contrast released all the dings on a date that was completely unexpected and some people survived the ding/deferral date just to find out, 20 days later that they were deferred after all...

I definitely agree with you latammc. Booth has been very upfront so far about their deadlines and notifications unlike other schools like Stanford.

For Roll Call - Received interview invite 1/22. Interviewed on campus.

Interviewer was pleasant & efficient. Wish we would've had longer to talk. No surprise questions.

Good luck to all!

I agree. This is just a minor bump in the road. Having attended a few R1 Admit events, I can honestly say that many of you have just as impressive qualifications--keep pushing forward.

I also appreciate the previous poster who put this process into perspective. A ding is incomparable to many greater things in life.

my sympathies to those of you who did not receive invites, i know its frustrating, especially when in some ways your stats profile may be even better than those of us who did. i think though its important to keep in perspective that this is probably the most competitive year for business school EVER (GMAT registration, application numbers), yet the amount of seats available at top schools have not changed materially. considering all the well qualified candidates applying, i think this leads to a less predictable and less rational (read:highly subjective) admissions decision process than we even imagined before. and except for an exceptionally lucky few, i believe that its really a numbers and fit game more than ever this year. its hard not to take it personally (i got dinged at HBS, it sucks), but keep your head down, continue to prepare for those other schools you applied to and you will prevail.

the debrief from my Booth interview today to follow later...
