International applicants : how did you submit the degree certificate to UCLA? Did you submit a notarized copy or did you get the degree certificate authorized by someone else? I have a sealed copy of my transcript, but only have the original degree cert with me.
I am planning to send a notarized copy of the deg cert along with my transcript. Do you think this acceptable?

haha, misterJJ, your sister is wrong then. People have told me the same thing, "unless you have some extraordinary community service or wild adventure, do NOT write an optional essay."
Well, I had a 500 word (1 page) optional essay discussing my "oh so boring" mentoring activities with a student organization at my alma mater for the past 8 years, as well as some other teaching (volunteering) gigs I do during my off time. It was a quick discussion of what I do to "give back to the community" (I know, sounds very cliche), and I think it probably helped my candidacy. At worst, it didn't hurt me getting into UCLA.
The key is, are you adding a NEW DIMENSION to your profile that you haven't talked about in your other essays? If you're just rehashing some things, or throwing in another example of community service, then the optional essay probably won't help as much. If this community service was not mentioned anywhere else in your other three essays, then by all means write an optional essay that brings out this important aspect of who you are.
