The author says lens resolution doesn’t matter because film can’t capture all the detail that lenses already provide, in other words, the film is the limiting factor.
For that conclusion to hold, the argument must assume that better lenses don’t make the film’s limitation even worse, that the lens resolution and film resolution don’t combine in a way that further reduces image detail.
That’s exactly what option (B) says: the differences between lenses don’t compound (add to) the film’s limitations.
If that weren’t true, then lenses would still matter, and the argument would fall apart.

Understanding the argument: So it projects “into” the film, there is a process in the film that constraints how good the image quality is!

Prethink a negation: Difference between cameras in this respect is relevant even though modern lenses are so excellent that they project far more detail onto the film than any other photographic film is capable of reproducing in a developed image.

Now we need to find an answer alternative that would if negated put an explanation that would destroy this argument.

(A) Sure, we expand the definition, but then, how does this new definition relate to if the difference between cameras matters for practical photography. It overruns this in the passage by saying “ since all modern lenses are so excellent “. Whether they capture this is or not is irrelevant!

(B) Negate: If they would compound in the film, then the difference would matter! Because differences do matter after all since they do compound into the film!

(C) So the variation in film and how it processes things, can all be true, but it would still be the case that the film is the constraint, no matter if there are different variations to it that creates different qualities.

(D) We do not need a condition for when it is absolute optimal since that would be the wrong focus of what the conclusion is “reproducing a developed image” ≠ “achieve the maximum image resolution”

(E) It says one of the factors, there is no indication that other factors could not play a role in the detail reproduced in the final photographic print.

Blueprint
If we have x is so excellent that the difference in x does not matter, since y is the constraint. Then x cannot compound (cause an effect) the quality of y, because then the difference would matter after all!

Bunuel
Camera manufacturers typically advertise their products by citing the resolution of their camera’ lenses, the resolution of a lens being the degree of detail the lens is capable of reproducing in the image it projects onto the film. Differences between cameras in this respect are irrelevant for practical photography, however, since all modern lenses are so excellent that they project far more detail onto the film than any photographic film is capable of reproducing in a developed image.

The argument depends on assuming which one of the following?

(A) The definition of the term “resolution” does not capture an important determinant of the quality of photographic instruments and materials.

(B) In determining the amount of detail reproduced in the developed photographic image, differences in the resolutions of available lenses do not compound the deficiencies of available film.

(C) Variations in the method used to process the film do not have any significant effect on the film’s resolution.

(D) Flawless photographic technique is needed to achieve the maximum image resolution possible with the materials and equipment being used.

(E) The only factors important in determining the degree of detail reproduced in the final photographic print are the resolution of the camera’s lens and the resolution of the film.
