There is no rule like that. You can write about any situation that suits the essay. But, you should remember the big picture, ie, a person who is reading all parts of your application should understand about you very clearly. More importantly, you should convey what you wanted to convey through your essays and resume.

Good luck!

Is it true that business schools want to the essay to be related to professional topics? I just work on the Essay 3 for MIT and what comes to my mind is about a decision on my personal life, not about work. I don't know if is suitable for this essay.

Hope someone give me some advices

Not only is it suitable, it's expected. If the only experiences you discuss in your essays are work related you can come off as very one dimensional. Unless the question specifically asks for a professional example you are free to choose an appropriate example from any aspect of your life (i.e. personal, professional, volunteer, hobby, etc.). Good luck with the essay!

I agree completely! I've always made sure to show different sides of myself in my applications (all 2 of them that i've completed dus far  ), it shows your well rounded.

No 2 essays should repeat the same story either. Like everyone said, show the schools that you're more than 1 dimensional.

Hi Lemonswell,

Yes, you can select non-professional topics for personal essays. Below are 2 case studies of candidates that used nonprofessional essays in their applications:

Hope this was of help.
