Hi everyone,
With ChatGPT and other AI tools becoming more common, a lot of MBA applicants are wondering:
Is it okay to use AI to help write my essays? It’s a fair question — and the answer isn’t totally straightforward. Here’s a quick breakdown of what business schools are saying in 2025, the real risks of using AI, and how you can (carefully) use tools like ChatGPT without hurting your application.
What Are Business Schools Saying About ChatGPT?
Columbia Business School: Columbia allows applicants to use AI tools like ChatGPT for
idea generation or
editing help, but writing a full essay with AI is not allowed. They specifically state that your work must be "exclusively your own," and if they find misrepresentation, your offer can be rescinded.
Harvard Business School: While HBS hasn't issued an MBA-specific policy yet, their general academic rules are clear:
You can use AI to support learning — but you have to
cite it properly, and you're responsible for fact-checking anything AI provides. Submitting AI-generated work as your own is considered an Honor Code violation.
Key takeaway: AI can help you brainstorm and organize, but the essays must still be your authentic work.
What Are the Risks of Overusing AI?
There are a few big concerns to watch out for if you rely too much on ChatGPT:
- AI detection tools: More schools are using detection software to spot AI-written content
- Loss of authenticity: Essays that sound generic, formal, or overly polished can feel hollow to admissions readers
- Honor Code violations: If a school believes your work is AI-generated without proper acknowledgment, it could jeopardize your admission
Even if you don't get caught by software, a generic essay won't make you stand out — and might actually hurt you.
How to Use ChatGPT (Without Hurting Your MBA Application)
If you want to use ChatGPT, think of it as a
brainstorming buddy, not a writer.
✅ Use it to generate ideas, structure an outline, or think of different ways to approach a prompt
✅ Use it to ask reflective questions about your experiences ("What leadership challenges did I face in X situation?")
✅ You can even ask it to summarize your draft — if the summary sounds boring, your essay probably needs more personal depth
🚫 Don’t let it write the full essay for you
🚫 Don’t copy and paste AI-generated text into your application
🚫 Don’t lose your personal tone, voice, or emotional insight — that's what schools actually care about
Final Thoughts
MBA programs in 2025 still care about the
human story behind your achievements.
While AI can help you get organized and avoid writer’s block, it can’t replace
your insights,
your growth, and
your voice. Those are what admissions officers want to see.
If you’re using ChatGPT to help along the way, that’s fine — just make sure the final product is something only
you could have written.
(Feel free to share your thoughts — is anyone here using AI tools in their application process? Are you more cautious about it after seeing what schools are saying?)
