For instance

- If the schools thinks the applicant isn't sure whether to attend an MBA program
- If the student is very qualified for an MBA but the school thinks it will lose this student to another better school

Do waitlists because of these two elements happen often, or would the former get rejected and the latter accepted with open arms anyway?

Schools may put you on the waitlist for any number of reasons, including the ones you mentioned, and they will probably not tell you why. Waitlisted candidates can take some of these actions: https://aringo.com/waitlist-campaign/

Hi redalertmba,

Yes, a school may waitlist applicants for both the reasons mentioned by you, among a host of various other reasons, which the school will most likely not specify :)

Thanks.

Generally, I think this is technically a thing but if they feel this way it is probably based on something you have shown them that makes them feel this way. Many qualified candidates get waitlisted, particularly at the top schools, this does not make you a bad or unqualified candidate. Kellogg, for example, will give a handful of candidates a call every year to tell them they loved them but ultimately did not have the space to admit. So again qualified candidates get waitlisted and denied every year
