Thank you for joining in TargetKellogg2024!

I have not fully reviewed all the replies and posts in this thread (some of them are hurtful I have to admit) but I can see it is very heated and hopefully productive. The goal was to expand expert benefits and encourage them to be regular contributors (rather than the opposite). I just received advice from one of the members over the PM to involve the experts into the design of the program, which I think is a valid point. I admit I have not expected that there would be any concern or push back, and I think that was the wrong call. I would love to suggest that we put this program on hold for the time being and work on a solution that benefits the community and involve both users as well as experts and get their input and opinions with the sole purpose of encouraging expert participation and providing users with the best experience. Does anyone disagree or have a better suggestion? Does anyone want to lead this effort? (I am definitely happy not to be the one posting it next time; if not, I will nominate someone but I would rather have someone volunteer).

This idea sounds excellent! I was actually going to suggest the involvement of all the relevant stakeholders in the decision-making process as well. After all, the GMAT Club is all about representing the interests of the people - "OF the people, FOR the people, BY the people".
I hope that the mentioned disputes can be resolved and forgotten without the students having to pay (pun intended) for the consequences that could be resolved amicably and respectfully.

To bb and all the tutors/experts in the forum- I have always had faith in this community and I believe that the shared commitment of the GMAT Club and the Experts to supporting GMAT learners will remain strong. I understand that the common interest of the forum lies in contributing to the GMAT learners' community, and I am confident that the sight of this interest will not be lost. My support is with you all <3

Peace.

Hi IanStewart,
IanStewart
It is unethical and dishonest to sell credentials in this way. It is also illegal, unless you clearly disclose that the credentials were bought. It’s a fundamental principle of endorsement law: if you are getting paid (or receiving anything of value) to endorse something, you need to disclose that you’ve been paid for that endorsement. That is exactly what you’ll be doing by endorsing people with a paid-for ‘Expert badge’.
I know nothing of US law, but if a forum complies with that requirement, it will have to create two types of badges:

1. One badge with a disclaimer that clearly acknowledges the quid pro quo relationship between the forum and advertisers, and
2. Another badge without such a disclaimer for people who haven't paid anything in exchange for their badges

If the badges are not the same, one group (the one that receives benefits in exchange) will stand out as being different. That's why I think it may be easier to make all badges completely free.

Hi vv65,
vv65
Still, I have agreed to be enrolled in the free plan because it is a recognition of contributions, and also because the 40-post requirement would force me to be more active on the site (let's see whether and for how long I continue).
I get your point. Tutor Benefits basically sets a monthly target for tutors who can't pay $200-300 per month. As I've said before, that target isn't unreasonable, and I know that I can hit it easily. But what about experts who can't?
vv65
Most private tutors would agree with IanStewart: "we post here anyway, because we enjoy teaching and because we feel we’re helping people". I don't post often (and I'm not as expert), but that's my main reason for posting on gmatclub.
On this point I agree with both you and IanStewart. Interacting with and learning from both test takers and other instructors is what motivates me. However, again, I can't help but think that some experts might like to see their efforts recognised even after they, for whatever reason, take a step back from active participation on GMAT Club.

Still, it's good to see that GC is willing to listen.

Totally agree with all your points. For me, hitting that target will require way more effort and regularity. (It reminds me of tasks assigned by management in pre-freelance days 🙈)

Do you have examples of the not impartial moderators?
I would like to address that issue.

I have communicated with you (and with Nightblade) privately about this at least once more than a year ago, and you defended the moderators who were repeatedly promoting one prep company on the forum. As far as I'm aware, you didn't do anything, and didn't see any reason why you should. You then appointed as a moderator someone who is the face of a long-running TTP marketing campaign. Two of your moderators' names were regularly mentioned in Empower's advertising, and possibly still are. Two other moderators regularly encouraged readers here, in the most effusive terms, to use a prep company product from a company that pays you thousands of dollars each month.

I'm not going to spend any of my time figuring out which of these moderators are still on your team when I have no reason to believe you even see a problem with any of this. But it is a problem if you want a fair and honest forum. A moderator who regularly promotes Prep Company X is probably going to regularly promote Prep Company X's posts on the forum too, given that power, since that moderator clearly thinks promoting Company X is a good thing to do. And when a moderator's name, and thus their reputation, is linked to a prep company, that moderator is not a disinterested party if someone questions the integrity of that company. If you read this thread, you'll see I'm not the only person who thinks some moderators will delete posts that question the practices of your prep company sponsors. That is not hypothetical -- I know it happens, because it has happened to me.

I want to be certain to add that I know some of you moderators are very good people, and I don't want to suggest your moderators are biased as a group.

Thank you. That’s a refreshing view.

Would you be interested in volunteering to lead this initiative or perhaps this group here can donate some funding to compensate you for the time and effort spent on developing a framework or approach?

Otherwise I am going to wait until someone else steps up or shelf this initiative until better times.

BB.

Every name above is a respectable name in the field and, rightly so, have minced no words on some pertinent issues that have been around for a considerable time now.

I have no affiliation to any prep company or rather I am not even professionally involved in the business till now and I am purely here for my passion and love for maths and GMAT. I may have helped few on their repeated insistence but have turned down many more because of other professional commitments. Yes, I would have given few questions to forums or some prep companies but have no other business interest.

So, I’ll purely speak from the point of love for GMAT and this forum. I have raised this issue with BB of getting GMAT kudos on the most silliest of posts such as ‘10% discount on xyz day’ and same set of 8-9 odd guys giving kudos. Can we have a mechanism to check these? Could be some neutral moderators putting across the point to the people concerned politely and then taking down such posts if required. I vaguely remember a thread on ethics team in which Andrew had volunteered too.

Coming to the point of Experts Badge. We should set high standards for anyone aspiring to get a badge. What I could immediately think of are ‘at least 100 posts( could be more or less) having more than 10 kudos’ or ‘those receiving kudos from at least 500 or 1000 members’.

Hi bb,
Thank you for the proposal. However, due to my full-time work and ongoing GMAT preparation, I don't believe I can fulfill the responsibility adequately. Therefore, someone more capable should be entrusted with this role.

Additionally, while I acknowledge the extensive experience of everyone involved in the process and their ability to create a framework, I would like to propose the following as a student:

I. Define the main objectives of the GMAT Tutor Program:
As previously mentioned, the program's main objectives can be divided into two parts:
1. Ensuring students can easily access reliable answers to every question.
2. Accurately identifying the experts, which will instill confidence in students regarding the posted answers.

II. Determine the participants in the planning and execution:
It would be reasonable to include at least three tutors, three students, and three members from the GMAT Club team. GMAT Club can conduct a survey where interested individuals can nominate themselves. To ensure transparency, three tutors and three GMAT Club team members should be randomly selected. Additionally, it would be appropriate to choose three active students from the forum.

III. Establish an agreeable framework:
Identify the most effective way for GMAT Club to collaborate with experts and students to create unbiased criteria for identifying individuals as experts. Furthermore, implement a profile verification initiative to prevent fake kudos. Only verified kudos should be considered for key performance indicators, similar to verified GMAT scores.

IV. Implement the framework:
GMAT Club can identify as many tutors on its platform as possible and provide them with the terms and conditions, while also posting the details on a common forum. Alternatively, a survey can be conducted where tutors interested in obtaining an expert tag can provide their information, and GMAT Club can proceed accordingly.

V. Gather feedback and make revisions:
Collect feedback from participants and make necessary revisions based on their input.

Now, let's consider the benefits of this approach:
1. Only tutors genuinely interested in obtaining an expert tag will be considered, eliminating bias towards specific tutors.
2. Involving the mentioned stakeholders in the decision-making process will maintain transparency in the criteria and eliminate bias.
3. Expert tutors will receive recognition for their contributions to the community.
4. Students will have a reliable source of answers.
5. Similar to the inclusion of school names and GMAT prep companies in the forum's new post dropdown, the names of expert tutors can be displayed, facilitating easier access for students.

I understand that the individuals involved are highly experienced in the workings of GMAT Club. However, I wanted to offer these suggestions. I am confident that GMAT Club will ultimately achieve its initial goals. Good luck!

I'm late to the discussion and don't have a lot to add other than it's discouraging to spend hundreds of hours trying to present myself as a competent GMAT instructor on this site, yet I've somehow lost my expert designation.
If I lost this designation because GMAT Club decided to shelve the whole "expert" concept, that would be a different matter, but now my expert designation is contingent on a payment, hours or $ to GMAT Club. It's disappointing.
