Career advice

I have 13 years experience in software development .
Want to move to CXO position in long run and want to understand how businesses work.
I seriously believe I can do good in strategy and brand building.
Want to do one year mba preferably which can help me move to upper management.
Is it possible to do one year regular mba after 13 yrs experience or any other option available?
I have 3 years onsite experience in Singapore and currently working there.
Please guide
Hi Sunny45678sd ! With 13 years of software development experience and a strong interest in strategy and brand building, transitioning into upper management and eventually a CXO role sounds like a good goal. A one-year MBA can certainly help, though you’ll need to choose a program that caters to experienced professionals. INSEAD, IMD, and Cambridge Judge can be nice options, given their focus on leadership and strategy. However, since most full-time one-year MBAs cater to candidates with 5-10 years of experience, you’ll need to showcase your leadership potential and a clear post-MBA transition plan. Alternatively, an Executive MBA (EMBA) from INSEAD, LBS, might allow you to gain business insights while continuing to work. Another great option can be a specialized leadership program like the Stanford MSx or MIT Sloan Fellows, designed for senior professionals. Research more programs, go through the class profiles and other application requirements, it will give you good information about the schools. Regardless of the path you choose, defining your post-MBA goals clearly, whether in corporate strategy, general management, or consulting, will be crucial. Networking and gaining exposure to business functions beyond tech will further strengthen your case for upper management roles. We would love to learn more about your profile in detail. Please feel free to book a profile evaluation call.

The Executive MBA program at INSEAD is what you want to be looking at closely. You won't even have to quit your job that way. Since you are already in Singapore, you can maybe even visit the INSEAD SG campus.

Hello Sunny45678sd,

Yes, you can definitely still do an MBA even with 13 years of work experience; of course, the schools you target will need to be in line with your GMAT score as well as your years of experience.

All the best!

Sunny45678sd - your work-ex is a bit on the higher side for most full-time MBA programs (check out some stats here).

Having said that, certain 1 year MBA programs could consider your profile so long as the professional arc, career goals, and motivations for an MBA are strong. Your other options are executive MBA, part-time MBA/ online MBA and the Sloan Fellows programs.

The selection on which program and school would depend on your profile and goals. Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

Regards,
Arvind
