CAT #2 (630,Q46,V32)
I was quite disappointed with my score beacuse i had assumed that there are only two areas i need to work on (I have attached my CAT#1 experience below). Time Management and application of preparation techniques while answering the exam. Then i quickly realized that i had assumed "i know all my weaknesses". So i quickly generated my report of my 2 CAT's and was shocked to see low accuracy across all sections. Although i had done an analysis of CAT#1, the bigger picture was not at all pretty. My accuracy in most of the sub regions hovers at about 50-60%. I had assumed Quant to be my forte and found i have scored a meagre 68% ile (46) on bot CAT's. Something i definetely need to work on. There was an improvement in verbal but that was partly due to, completing the paper on time during the second attempt.
So, this time i am asking the following questions and looking for suggestions.
1) What more resources can i exhaust for Quant (PS); because i feel the OG is not sufficient. Actually, I do not find any of the problems undoable on the exam. My errors are mostly careless on the quant section ? I have about a 95% accuracy while solving PS from OG. Would it be even helpful to use another resource. ?
2) Reading comprehension is another area of concern for me. I followed my preparation strategy this time around. Made notes, scribled, got the flow of ideas in place, understood the message being delivered; but somehow the moment i look at the question stem i tend to jump the gun. It's like someone smudged all over my canvas.
3) Attention deficit is still a problem. I need to develop more stamina; that will definetely come through more mocks. Any useful tips on that ?
4) Critical reasoning : I think this is the dicey area for me. I have gone through the CR of OG about twice. I have now stopped solving new CR questions. I just want to dig deeper into this area and not start on any new questions till i have mastered the old ones. I really need some advice on analysing CR questions. My inability to analyze and identify patterns in CR is causing me to lose precious time and resources. Help on this would be great.
Other suggestions are welcome. I am targetting GMAT, 2 months from today. And will be posting all my future CAT experieces on this thread only.
My CAT#1 Expereince (20/04/2014)
I took this test on Manhattan GMAT (CAT Exam #1) today and scored a 600(Q46, V28) with a 68%ile and 50%ile in Quant and Verbal and an overall 60%ile.
My Preparation level
For the past month i have browsed through the verbal part of OG (excluding sentence correction) and about half of QA.
My Hurdles during the exam.
I faced two major problems while attempting the exam.
1) I was not able to use the same techniques and strategies as i was while casually solving questions. For instance when i am solving a CR question I categorize the question and then target it. But nothing like this happened during the exam. The same with RC. While i am solving RC questions i generally summarize each paragraph before moving on, but failed to do so during the Mock test.
Any suggestions on how can this area be worked ?
2) I also felt i was worked out in the mid way of Verbal section. Concentration just kept falling with every question i advanced in verbal and was unable to complete it. I was very skeptical against guessing because i feel it will translate into negative marks and hence chose to leave questions towards the end.
Did this translate into a huge loss ? Does an incomplete GMAT paper attract more penalty than guessing questions towards the end ?
