Hi
I am an international student applying for mfe fall 2011. I have also enrolled for CFA level 1 in dec.
does it make sense to wait for the result in late Jan and then say in my sop that I have cleared cfa level 1 or will applying so late seriously affect my chances?
because that would be better than saying 'I am appearing for cfa in dec 2010'..right?
any help is appreciated

There was a discussion here about the impact CFA designation may or may not have on your application package. The bottom line was that many adcoms simply are not aware of the rigor and intensity of the CFA Program. It appears that being CFA can not help you a lot. It even may not help you at all.
So "passed level I" or "registered for level I" makes no big difference to me. Do not factor this into your time-management decisions

I passed CFA Level 1 before entering the bschool and here are my impressions regarding the CFA designation:
1) It impresses your potential recruiters and fellow students more than the admissions office or any professors. Remember, adcom/professors, etc are academics. They are more impressed with other things on your app, than your CFA credential.
2) It's also not as impressive to the recruiters unless you have relevant experience (internship, other work exp, etc) on your resume. CFA by itself simply demonstrates "how serious you are about pursuing a career in financial services" and your level of interest in the field.
It's not a make or break factor for admissions, but pretty important once you get a job. So, I would concentrate on getting into a program NOW, and then worry about it later.
